I've set up a tipping community for the World Cup for TheBore:

http://www.kicktipp.de/thebore/

Hopefully we can get enough people to maker it worthwhile. If the language isn't automatically english (it should be), you can change it in the upper right corner. Ask me if there are any problems, although everything should be pretty self explanatory.

yeah, i have USA as my dark horses for the tournament

USA players tend to have incredibly high levels of fitness and they've already shown they can hack it on the world stage
They also have Klinsmann at the helm which will mean a lot of attacking football

The question is whether they will be able to deal with teams that deliberately pack the middle and back and force a slower game (i expect a huge number of teams to do this in the heat), so the deeply technical teams will do very well

I still think that one of the big teams is going to get shocked - Chile could well upset that Spain / Netherlands group

There's definitely going to be a big shock. It's inevitable due to the climate.

Himu, Wrath (and everybody else) join the tipping game I posted. DCarlie and TheBusiness are already on board. You basically tip the score for every game and get points for the correct "trend" (correct winner or draw) and additional points if you predict the exact score/goal difference/amount of goals for one team. You can do that on a game by game basis, no need to do it all in advance. If you see that a team performs shit in their first game, you can adapt your future tips. If your predictions for the ko phase are not correct, you can still give tips for the actual schedule.

Signing up is superquick, don't even need to confirm the e-mail (at least not right away)

I remember that whole World Cup run.  The 3-0 lead that they clung on to for a 3-2 win, Portugal being a dark horse to go deep in the tournament (Figo and their "golden generation"), the South Koreans miming short-track speed skating after scoring, as revenge for an Apollo Ohno controversy basically nobody in the US remembered.

I went to RFK where they were showing the Germany-US quarterfinals game on the jumbotron.  Fucking Oliver Khan.

God, the USA is a mess. We're the only country in the world that is both rooting against itself and has extraordinarily unrealistic hopes for its ability.
A quick look at the rest of the poll will give you the answer as to why USA is both rooting for itself and against itself.

Guys, given the way Brazil played this match, I think we can hope they don't even get past the final 16. If they play like this against some of the bigger teams? lol. :rofl Assuming the refs don't pad them up a bit (which they will!).

Brazil has gone on to be the most hated team after today's match. Germans saying they will root for Italy if it means beating Brazil :lol

FIFA has backwards and lax referee calls, though. They need more refs. They also don't allow replays at the World Cup. Yes, you heard me. They also are fine with and reward diving. If this were the MLS for instance, this would never happen. FIFA should be more strict on things like this.

Also, after this, I fully :maf Neymar Jr. Dude points to God after he DIVES. :what

After 2010, FIFA did install that goal-line tech for this World Cup to tell if the player is past the goal line but yeah still no video replays. It kind of makes sense since it could possibly slow the pace of the game down, cause pauses in the game that sponsors use as an excuse to run ad breaks, and it would make the cost of official games higher which could be a problem for a global sport that is popular in a lot of developing nations.

Well who lets a Japanese ref do a game at the world cup? This isn't charity.

Of course none of this would have happened if there was video playback available.

Fifa Blatter Maffia won't allow that though for obvious reasons, which are MONEY.

It wouldnt slow the game down at all cause you already get players protesting and shit. Also its about JUSTICE.

HELLO BLATTER AND PLATINI IS THAT YOU?

You know, you don't need video playback when you are playing on a dirt patch in the amazon forest. But when it's the world cup or champions league you should have it.

First game has been totally ruined by the lack of it already, how can you still support the corrupt system of no playback??

When they start having replays for positioning and fouls and then inevitable commercials I'm done with the sport. Make the call and live with it. The bad refs at the World Cup get black listed, we get to complain, FIFA gets richer. That's the deal and it always has been.

True enough. Living with the call is something I do love about the sport. However, for the World Cup? Definitely should have replays for contested calls.

So you rather have unfair results, as long as the game is fluid*?

*magical whimsy term that is based on nothing except your fear of change

How is this 3-1 result FUN and FAIR?

The game won't loose speed if you have extra refs watching replays and just vote on the decision within seconds.

Games won't be ruined by this shit anymore.

Replay in the North American pro sports leagues tends to grind games to a halt, despite pretty strict limitations on how and when it can be used.  And there are still plenty of controversial and outright blown calls in those leagues, with fans constantly complaining about the refs.

But you're right, we should absolutely trust FIFA to implement a system that will minimally impact the pace of the game while completely eliminating bad calls.  They've certainly earned that confidence.

I don't think more refs on the pitch is necessary. I think if they have a team of refs who are monitoring the match like we are on tv, it'll help in situations like this to tell the refs on the pitch, that no, that wasn't a foul. It definitely would take some refinement to implement without taking away from the sport. The appeal of soccer is its brisk pace with few stoppages.

I think both views have good arguments. I think it's a tough choice in general. On the other hand, what about post-match yellow/red cards? Or giving diving a punishment? There are many things FIFA can do. The problem is that, well... It's fucking FIFA. But with the looming career of Sepp Blatter ending, we may get our wish yet.

Fifa is good at giving a player a red card after the game, but they never cancel a goal.

Madark it's hard to be cool when you care about this sport a lot and you see it being destroyed by a corrupt sports body.

Another example of fifa/uefa mafia is the penalty against Man City being changed now because they can't comply with the rules. LOL.
If it was a smaller team they would be banned from the CL for breaking the rules  but because its Man City they get a fine and have to have x number of home grown players in the squad, now that they can't comply with it the UEFA is changing their penalty. Fucking ridiculous.

If top level soccer ever implements instant replay, there's an extremely good chance that plays like the one everyone's mad at wouldn't even be reviewable.  Typically replay is used to figure out if some combination of a player, ball, or boundary line touched each other, rather than to review player-on-player fouls or other "judgment calls."  Hence no reviews to determine block/charge fouls in the NBA* or pass interference calls in the NFL.

Much more likely replay or some automated system would be used to determine offsides or handballs (though in that case you still need a ref to assess the intent of the player).

*Except to check whether a defender's feet were inside the restricted area, which gets us back to the player/ball/boundary line thing.

If I can review it in 2 seconds on tv so can a panel of refs watching the game. 3 refs on the pitch, 3 refs watching the game.

There is no stopping the game for more then 15 seconds, thats the time players argue with the ref anyway at least.
