Anyways, 3-2 Germany. I'm probably giving Portugal WAY too much room here.

Is it so uncommon to put yourself in the underdog or outsider position in the US?

I think it's more common for a coach to use public/media perception of your chances and use it as motivation. They call it 'bulletin board material'. In reference to a coach pinning some negative thoughts up on a wall for all to read.

So, maybe Klinnsman thought it would be more effective if it came from himself, instead of something from the American media which barely pays attention or has informed criticism.

Also, there's a bit of me that thinks he's trying to manage expectations just in case his team falls on it's face and loses 11-0 (over the course of 3 games) and people want his head because of the humiliation.

I'm not calling for us to be violent, but I'd watch and go to NFL games more often if I was allowed to sing that the Tennessee Titans are cunts with thousands of other people. The rivalries are there. The fan interaction is not.

NATAL, Brazil -- Just four days ago, United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann raised eyebrows across the country when he said that his U.S. team winning this World Cup "is just not realistic."

But a day before the Americans open their tournament here against Ghana, he appeared to backtrack from that stance.

"I booked my flight after the final," Klinsmann said Sunday at the United States' pre-match press conference at Arena das Dunas in this coastal, northeastern city.

Then there's the average non-soccer loving American. I know we will lose. But I am hoping at least make it out of the group stage. Getting out of group stage is our most immediate goal. Guys, to be fair, we are learning. In the USA, the idea of fans participating in sports is unheard of. All the leagues try to offer some entertainment. When you go to an NFL or NBA game there's always blaring shitty music like Welcome to the Jungle x 999999. Yes, they play it more than a Final Fantasy critical hit. During half time they have these stupid shows for DA WHOLE FAMILY like random people getting a try to shoot the ball. All the leagues except MLS, don't WANT you to participate in the game. They want to be family-friendly activities (tm) and to be as passive as possible. They want to go there, shut the fuck up, yell DE-FENSE because we are boring as shit, buy popcorn, and leave. Only MLS even allows that level of crowd interaction, and we need a big push.

You're right, the last time I went to a Cards game I heard Primetime playing :holeup

But you're on point with the rest of it. Personally I don't really have a problem with American sporting being friendly, especially for kids. Considering the overall level of violence and fuckery associated with rowdy sporting, I'd rather be polite.

Sounders FC do a really nice job of accommodating crazy chanting soccer fans while still being family friendly.

I'm gonna be honest here; i just don't care about that shit. I go to my games/fights to have a nice view, eat terrible food and chill in my seat. I always thought I was just a dispassionate fan, but I suppose more Americans are like me than I thought. It's enough to wear the gear and cheer when appropriate for me.

I just wanna go and have a fun time. :yeshrug a fun time for me at a sporting event is yelling my tits off. A big part of wrestling for me is fan interaction as well. Always have a blast at wrestling events. I prefer things that let you be a participant I guess. Why else pay all that money?! I can observe and be a regular spectator by just watching the game on tv. Going to a game should feel like an event to me, anyways.

It will be available on ESPNradio, I guess it just comes down to whether the local affiliates want to broadcast it or not.

We're the better team and everything is going our way. Portugal have slim chances of coming back with a men less. I laughed so hard at Pepe getting that red card, so of a bitch, although for the game it would have been better if Portugal would have still 11 players.

Oh man this is so nice

Fucking Pepe out too

 :win

Spain wasn't crap in the first half, it was neck a neck! Also Spain and Germany are both favourites for the cup, Portugal is a B list underdog like Holland. So it's less  an upset although the score is very high.

Last World Cup there was this silly merchandiser who sold hats that said I <3 [participatingcountryname] and I rue the day I didn't buy one for the DPRK.

I wonder if that merchandiser is doing the same thing for this World Cup, a I <3 Islamic Republic of Iran hat would be an almost acceptable substitute to the one I missed out on.

Can't tell if that was more or less embarassing than Spain's loss.

Depends on your point of view. Spain is individually maybe the best team, they got beaten by one of the second row teams. With Germany against Portugal, like Lager said, the Underdog lost. Personally I'd say the difference in talent between Germany and Portugal is bigger than between Spain and the Netherlands. Portugal is a good team, but Germany was still the favourite by far.

On the other hand, Spain was equal to the Netherlands for at least one half and the big scoring difference was partly explained by a decision by the referee, a huge mistake by the spanish goalkeeper and individual errors in the spanish defence. Also the netherlands played fantastic in the second half. So the game ultimately wasn't a just a bad performance by Spain, but lots of things coming together.

In todays game, germany played good, but Portugal was awful the whole game through, they never had a chance to win this game and really had only one proper chance. So while they weren't supposed to win this game like spain was, the way they lost was more embarrasing too me.
