That was fucking exciting

That was amazing. I thought we were going to be lucky to escape with 1 point after Ghana finally scored. But our plucky heroes pulled it out. Mind you, it wasn't the prettiest 100 minutes of soccer (I'm adding the stoppage time in before someone corrects me that a game is only 90 minutes), but at least our next game is against Portugal and not Germany.

The win was great, but the Altidore injury kind of dampens my mood for future success.

Those  announcers were pretty annoying with their slobbering all over the US team. I hate homers that go overboard.

Eh, it sounded more like he was pulled for precautionary reasons than because he was seriously injured, right?

looked like a hammy. those things are season killers.

still probably beat his 13/14 stats though.

I dunno, I know soccer players are drama queens, but hamstring injuries never really go away in a short time span.  In baseball or football, your usually looking at 2-3 weeks at best, 1-3 months at worst.

as an englishman, i'd warn you against feeling too great about that game. it really reminded me of those "OUR BRAVE LADS" wins where we'd cynically hoof it up the park for 80 something minutes and grab a set piece winner, then somehow act surprised a few days later when a real team embarrasses us.

america were a good looking team in 2010. rough around all possible edges but at least they played with a little flair and confidence. maybe it was just the altidore injury throwing everything out of wack, but every element of the team looked weaker tonight than last time around (except howard).

hopefully portugal can bring out the best in you.

Quiet you. Let us enjoy this moment. Ghana dashed our hopes in the last two World Cups, and this time we beat them. We're the greatest team in the world!

That goal nearly made me cry.

Also, I think we can take Portugal but it depends on how healthy we are.

i'm not sure how you're going to take portugal. they melted down earlier today but are still a quality side. your attack looked completely lost with altidore (weird saying that), your pass completion and general ball retention was horrendous and your back four gave ghana all the space in the world to move the ball around.

i'm being harsh here because i've had to watch my national side do all this shit for the last decade. we finally showed sparks of maybe evolving out of it on saturday and i wouldn't want to curse another side to the same fate.

Really though;

Salute Tim fucking Howard for dealing with ~80 minutes of having Ghana on his ass. The goals were extremely clutch but man, he really faced a firing squad out theretoday.

for sure. he was the one world class player on the pitch tonight and made all the right calls, even when they seemed suicidal.

What was everyone's favorite game of the first set? Of the ones I saw, I liked Aus vs Chile the best.

USA match aside?

For some reason, Mexico vs Cameroon. Rainy pitch, two sides fighting out it out, physical match while these two teams are covered in rain, mud slides. Just a fun ass match.

Jozy :larry I'm not even a big Jozy fan, but even I can tell USA needs him badly
Brooks :gladbron What a hero :lawd
Bradley :maf What did he do the whole game? :maf
Howard :tauntaun His consistency and making sure that Ghana wouldn't score despite there being shot after shot was admirable. Proves why goalkeeper is my favorite position, they're just rad :heartbeat

Well, this could mean that soccer is getting more popular. Or it could mean that Brazil's timezone similarity just facilitates more watching of games here. These times are more favorable than South Africa, Germany, and Japan/South Korea.

USA-Ghana did a 14.4 in NYC on ESPN/Univision combined. The average of all Jets/Giants games last season in NY was 14.1 across FOX/CBS/NBC.

Shame we let Belgium secede and only took back a part of it.

With them we would have quite the squad.

Then again if Holland never won independence from Spain that would have been killer too.
