my head says Japan and Greece to draw, but my heart says 3-1 Japan - so i went with head and went DRAW

England are out next game - 2-1 , shitty Rooney display, and he gets all the blame - typically shitty England fans
Rooney should be no where near the team - bring the youngsters through - how can you move Sterling out to the wing after the first game? Rooney is shite for England - even IN possition.

rooney is still our top goalscorer and even on the wing he didn't have a bad game against italy. he missed a sitter and fluffed a corner, but was a core element of making things (almost) happen whenever he found himself in the hole. his main issues were with his defensive duties on the wing (no, i don't support man u).

sterling loves the right wing and its where he spent most of the italy game. you need his pace to track back and hold a wingback shape or you get a mess like when rooney wasn't helping out baines as he should. i'm not going to lament having someone with sterling's pace hold the same side of the pitch as our armour's weakest link.

we might not get the result we need tomorrow, but if we play like saturday, it should be a comfortable win. uruguay's defence was already shot to pieces before they lost half of it to suspension/injury (one of which is their captain). they had trouble dealing with pace, and pacebabbies are england's best asset this time around.

i'd usually take the cynical "england are gonna bottle it, just you watch" high ground, but fuckit, it's only once every four years and for once rationality is on our side. a more surgical team could de-construct what is fast, exciting but hole filled premiership style football, but i don't think uruguay is that team.

as long as we don't go out playing cynical hoofball, i'll take it. 2010 was the low point of english football (even worse than not qualifying for 08) and i'm just happy to see we're at least going in the right direction.

One of soccer's most respected knee surgeons told Cristiano Ronaldo that continuing to play on his injured knee is career-threatening, according to El Confidential.

Seem to be the only person here who likes Ronaldo. He's a good guy, especially off the pitch. He's a great player, and he's not a dick. So what if he cries against a Germany? They were 4-0 and on top of that he couldn't play to his full potential and help out. He's only got one World Cup left in him, and maybe not even that if his knee keeps acting up. A 4-0 game when I couldn't go all out because of an injury being the end of my international career would make me cry too. He must have been incredibly frustrated.

I interchange it these days because when you watch international soccer the media and sport uses football and footballer and shit like that. Eventually, it becomes ingrained because the only way to talk about it on the internet is to talk about it with Europeans, who of course call it football. So then you get to a point where you're so fucking used to seeing the word you just use it without thinking. :(

Older English folks I know told me soccer used to be used more interchangeably with football back in the day.  I rather suspect the backlash comes from wanting to let yanks know that the NFL isn't real football blah blah blah.  Just the dumbest thing to get fired up about, even in the ocean of dumbness that is sports.

And don't sweat it, Himu.  You're the Bore's Zelig, it's why we love ya.  :heart

Just by the sheer frequency it comes up, a lot of it is trolling but some of it is legit annoyance. You have to remember what football is to some people, it becomes their lives and religions. I grew up with a dad and brother that were this way, hell I played football myself. I never got into it as much as they did in their fandom, but I certainly do hold a little pride from that time and I do identify with fans because of my upbringing

Calling it soccer is certified LAME but I don't get into debates about it because that reeks of being a freshman or high school student and talking about religion and life after death and other deep issues that don't mean shit.

Just as if someone says they believe in Jesus and creationism I let it slide, laugh on the inside but don't debate it.

Lets talk football again.

Are you religious? serious question.  You guys will never understand the level off buttfucking insanity football fans have. What you guys do when you call it soccer is like calling the Quran the Koerant or, for Americans, calling pancakes crepes. It's an instant annoyance due to the investment people put into football and if you contradict the religion you're gonna get knifed like a Rangers fan at Celtic Park.

Back on topic, but this has been a MUCH better WC than the last one.  Outside of the big moments, I mostly remember a lot of really cautious play and very few goals.  Spain 1-0'ing their way to the championship while every opponent played ten men behind the ball was sort of emblematic of the tournament as a whole.  Just been a lot more daring, entertaining play already this year.

All those 1-0 victories, thats Greece level of squeezing by.

I dunno why people praised them, but Netherlands was so much more entertaining that tournament. Yeah we played hard in the final but whatever.

People complained about Spain being boring, but surely that had more to do with how the other teams played Spain (park the bus, hope for a counterattack every 15 or so minutes).  It's not even that you have to make that excuse for Spain, it's common in soccer: when Stoke or Sunderland or whoever go on the road against a top-5 team in the EPL it's typically a drudge, and nobody says "wow, United/Tottenham/Liverpool/Arsenal play such a boring style!"

And the Dutch had some luck themselves, in de Jong not being sent off with over 60 minutes to play in regulation.

I don't think any EPL team plays that kind of boring tiki taka, even when faced by a team parking the bus.

I've been disappointed with the asian teams (Korea + Japan) they are still playing a brand of football I like, but they seem to lack the bite they had 8 and even 4 years ago.
