This is probably going to fuck up Twitch badly if YouTube is any indicator.  Oh well.

If we are just talking about a quality of service issue then Twitch is already pretty shitty. It constantly lags. It constantly goes down. It's about the only video service quality wise that I would say is actually worse than youtube.

I think "shutting down streams because somebody is playing copyrighted music" is a much larger concern.

I'm more thinking in terms of blocking content.

That I would agree with. And yeah playing copyrighted music which a ton of twitch streams do is gonna go I'm assuming fairly quickly.

And for what it's worth I don't think YouTube's been "ruined" at all. YouTube's design pre-Google was a piece of shit and it's doubtful they'd even be around today if they hadn't been bought. If they'd been bought by someone else like Yahoo, they'd probably be six feet under by now anyways. But sure, YouTube's been "ruined" because of G+ integration. ::)

Oh, the fact that it's still running petabytes of bandwidth every day? That's why it's been ruined?

Or is it the fact it has the largest catalogue of videos online? That's the part that ruined it?

Please enlighten me. ::)

You're talking about the site from a design perspective. We are talking about it from a user interface and usability perspective.

YouTube is way more usable now. The side menu is gross, but do you remember how playlist controls used to work? That fucking bar at the bottom of the screen with tiny ass buttons? Holy shit, what a horrid UI.

Old-style channels AKA MySpace 2.0? The new One Channel design is FAR more usable.

Kill me now if you think the top one is better and more usable.

I can agree YouTube stutters now more than it used to, but it also has more users and HD content than it used to. I've seen what it takes to deal with bandwidth and I don't envy YouTube's backend/CDN engineers at all, they have a far harder job of it than almost anyone. The fact that it's even online without constant Fail Wail pages is a marvel of internet engineering.

don't take it so personally, andy.  it's not about google.  it's that i can't actually think of a situation where a big company coming in and buying something smaller yet successful has ever worked out for the better.

you disagree, that's fine.  we'll see how it goes for twitch.  between the shit sandwich of amazon fucking up comixology and glu fucking up gamespy, i'm all out of optimism this month.

It just kind of annoys me because I feel like YouTube today is finally what I always wanted it to be. For years I enjoyed the site but it always had these nagging design elements I hated. I'll admit I didn't get involved in very many "communities" and my use cases aren't everyone's.

And for what it's worth, I do think Google has a higher batting average when it comes to acquisitions. The big ones have worked out pretty well, for the most part. (Even before getting kicked to Lenovo, Motorola had turned itself around and remade itself into something pretty awesome under Google's watch.)

The Comixology thing fucking sucks though. But I think that's the difference with Google. Just this week they announced Paypal integration in Google Play. If Google had bought Comixology, I imagine the payment situation would have remained exactly as it was before. And yes, Google has their own mobile OS and ecosystem, but they still put out polished iOS apps. Google still has my trust when it comes to these situations (whereas Amazon lost it pretty quickly.)

Google web design is bland as shit too unfortunately :(

Spartan design is the best and the trend of flat/minimalism shows others started realizing it too.

That said, YouTube is a bit utilitarian even by Google standards. It could use some added design TLC like the Google+ site (hate the network all you want, but it's full of pleasing design elements.)

One of the buffering/preload issues isn't ISP related because YouTube Center stops it from happening. (Though that script in general seems to have busted and hasn't been updated in months.)

Where's the gun to kill you with, Andy? Because for me, personally, I prefer the top. It may not be "Web 2.0"/hot for you, but I am a man of 90's web design. So long as it loads fast, doesn't have me side-scroll and doesn't look "busy" I'm fine with minimal "my first webpage/Myspace page" design. Drop the left panel/"popular on YouTube," drop the right "channels" panel, drop the top bar. Leave the videos, leave the related. Link the profile of the author/uploader under it so I can click that to see more of their videos. Final usability destination.

Bottom looks clean there, but that's because Andy is using extensions to remove some of the bullshit Youtube has, so he's cheating there.

The top looks bad, yes. It's using a flash player, which the one good thing Google brought to Youtube was the mandate of future webstandards.

Drop the "login and rate" box. Drop the comments. Drop the director videos bar. Move the "From:" info box to where the "login and rate" box was. Youtube would've been fine there. Granted, it'd need a UI and standards overhaul but at least it wouldn't look bloated and full of shit that no one cares about.

Twitch is just as bad as Youtube, if not worse in delivering content. Stream servers overloaded, quality is hit and miss depending on the connection the streamer has (could have the best connection ever but because Twitches servers suck, low quality for anything above 5 viewers)... no, it kinda needs the Google buy out in regards to improvement to services a small bit. But it'll probably go to shit if it gets "mainstream" and kills the community with Google trying to intergrate it with it's social network.

G+ seems to be getting de-emphasized after Gundotra's departure, but I could see mandatory migrating to Google accounts in general eventually (same that happened with YouTube when it was first bought.) Other than that, it should stay relatively on its own (at least in terms of having its own site, UI, features, etc.) There will probably be more Google integration but if it leads to stuff like Chromecast support, I say bring it on.

I don't think esports will be impacted by this. Youtube has streamed esports before in very high quality, and the companies involved (Riot, Blizzard, Valve, etc) aren't going to complain about violations or copyrights for most stuff. They know streaming is essential.

I'm more worried about the the various "Let's Play X" stuff, or say StarCraft streamers who decide to play some random other game. There's a lot of shit on twitch that would be shitcanned by a more strict copyright enforcement policy, which Youtube will no doubt bring.

and then there's the issue of google+...I can already imagine how they'll try to grow that by making you follow streamers/players/etc bah...

No. It. Is not.

Comments used to be ordered by most popular and most viable. Top comment made sense. Then you clicked a button to see the replies and they instantly show up. G+ integration SCATTERS comments. On the Jet Jaguar song that I posted earlier, the comments used to be hilarious ans in a certain order. Now the top comments are at the middle of the page. IT MAKES NO SENSE. More than that, when you do get a thread of some interesting conversation. If someone replies to someone, it now says ______ replied to ______ so instead of clicking read replies and instantly read them you have to click the replied to ________ button and it loads another page, and then only loads that one comment you wanted to read.

The new comments system is now the worst comment section on the internet due to how they are now organized.
