Nah. Mooose changed my mind on fishscale. That shit is wild overrated. It's a good album, not even a great one. Lots of bad weed carrier verses and ghostwritten lazy shit. I'm also gonna have to hit you with the at including Bulletproof Wallets OG in there as if that's legit, I might as well say the bootlegged versions of Vol. 3 are good albums. Stop it 5.

And ima disagree with you on Ghost's second tier albums. Most of the tracks on that shit are real forgettable.

Now if you were gonna look at it holistically and compare everything Jay spit to everything Ghost spit (which would bring up his work on OB4CL and Wu-Tang group cuts), I'd agree with you there.

This post is curiously absent of an argument for Jay having the best catalog.

I'll stand by Fishscale. Great production some surprising variety, content wise. It's not as drugged out as his first two albums (you can tell Ghost is high out his mind on Motherless Child for instance) but it's like a transition record between that stuff and his more mellow, less colorful recent stuf. The coke rap on it is also better than just about anything that has come out since then. I remember HHNF came out the same year and it sounded like a weaker remake of Fishscale or Cuban Linx.

Jay has Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, and The Black Album. Reasonable Doubt...can't say anything bad about it, it speaks for itself as a great album. I think The Blueprint is overrated but still really good and it's production had an undeniable impact on mainstream rap. Black Album: dope. But none of them are better than Iron Man or Supreme Clientele. I'll obviously take RD over Fishscale, but Fishscale over the other two.

Vol 1...nah. I look at it as a worse version of Life After Death: meh r&b tracks, some classic tracks, but ultimately forgettable overall. Vol 2...featuring one of his worst tracks (the one with Mariah) and other bad tracks (Juve track, never liked the original Watcher) but it starts amazing with the intro, Dope Man, So Ghetto...

Are we counting The Dynasty? I remember that came out and dudes were like meh outside of a few tracks.

He hasn't done anything noteworthy since The Black Album.

Throw in some r&b tracks, Diddy shit, and whoosh. Lyrically Jay goes off on a few tracks, like he's truly going for the crown. But then there's stuff like I Know What Girls Like...

BP3 and Magna Carta has hot singles and unlike you i like to go out and party once in a while. I don't mind doing it whilst listening to my favorite rapper

Vol. 3 is his only mediocre album in his prime. It's interesting because on features and other songs, he's in crazy top shape, like arrogant crazy flow. But it just didn't make a good album. He knows it's not a good album either. It's on the bottom of his personal stack.

American Gangster is aite. I think it's super overrated, it just doesn't sound authentic. And when I say "authentic" I don't mean "bububu Jay isn't busting his guns." It just doesn't sound like his heart is in it to me, and when I compare it to mafioso or coke rap of the time it doesn't really match up.

I'm surprised no one really sampled that part of Between The Sheets until Ignorant Shit. Unless I'm forgetting something.

I've heard some of SD, including a horrible track produced by Q-Tip. I just don't get it brehs. Who is in the studio with Nas, and who is telling him this shit is hot. It's just weird when you read about the creation of Illmatic, including Nas specifically picking samples and orchestrating various parts (like getting Pete Rock to do the chorus on The World Is Yours). Yet after that he pretty much took a backseat in the creative process for later albums. It Was Written is basically Steve Stoute getting the most expensive production team to craft a mainstream sound, and I Am is a mixture of his homies (LES) and major names like Timbo.

Stillmatic featured a focused Nas being very concerned about the direction of his work, and it shows. God's Son has a very sombre feel to me. But after that Nas' focus seems more on narrative concepts - everything else is secondary to him. Singles, production, features, none of it seems to matter on HHID/Untitled as he lurches from concept to concept. And it just sounds off. The frustrating thing is that there are some great tracks on both albums like Fried Chicken or Still Dreamin, both of which happen to have great beats.

Sales aren't comparable to critical acclaim IMO. I just thought it was interesting. In fact, Nas' last few albums were well received whereas Jay's were universally panned.
