I got a new router today and I realized something
« on: May 29, 2014, 01:00:04 AM »
Youtube and twitch don't suck.

My old router did.

 :'(

And it's been this way for a couple years and I didn't even realize. Just a heads-up for anybody who might be in the same boat.

I had a similar experience a few months back when replacing router+modem.  three to five times faster.  and the router alone was considerably faster.

How would you diagnose this without having the hardware to switch back and forth?

What router did you get? I've been thinking about ditching my cable modem (and paying the 5 dollar/month charge) and getting a new modem/router package.

I've been very happy with this:

http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TD-W8980-Wireless-Gigabit-Compatible/dp/B00C4OANW0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1401370612&sr=8-1&keywords=tp+link+modem+router

Oh sweet, I've been looking for a new router to replace the piece of shit Comcast "loans" me. Fucking thing drops connections like a mofo and is practically unusable at like 2am every single night.

I'm pretty sure you can find better ones (I heard good stuff about some Netgear Nighthawk or something) but that one was ideal for me due to router/modem combo and I bought it cheaper locally.

It was just the later revision/version of whatever my cable company uses, but the difference was immediately noticeable.

If you are in the market for a router, buy one that already has AC in it so you are future proofed.

Now you can try Chromecast on your home network! Apparently bad routers will completely destroy its performance.

I should replace mine. Speeds are fine, but I have to renew the DHCP twice a week to avoid timeouts.

How would you diagnose this without having the hardware to switch back and forth?

Something I was able to do before I switched equipment was connect directly to the modem with a CAT5 cable, and run a speed test.  Then connect to the router and run the same speed test, and compare results.

Something else I noticed was that the cable can actually make a big difference.  I was using an old CAT5 cable that I had made back in high school originally, and got sub par performance.  When I upgraded gear, I also got a new cable because of the area that I was putting the equipment (flat CAT6 cable  :aah).  Speeds are crazy nice now, and even on my old gear it was way better than it was before the new cable.

Currently running a D-Link DIR-655.  It's pretty nice, imo.

I have a combined router and modem, so that's out. Hm. Wonder if anyone reviewed it... Off to Google.

It's time for me to get a new one. Any suggestions for a good <$55 router? I don't want to go all out on a router, and I have reservations about internet service in my area. Comcast sucks, I know it's not just my router, and AT&T isn't much better from what I've heard.

I have an old wireless G Linksys.

Should I get G or N? I have G now. Mainly using it for general computer stuff and gaming, Roku (Netflix) streaming, and a laptop.

A router is something I feel you can't spend too much money on. I mean, whatever you're paying to the ISP, if you have a shitty router you're not getting the full use of it. You're basically overpaying the ISP for MB/s you don't use.

Anyways, one week later and my ASUS RT-AC66U is performing like a fucking BOSS. The first day, it was disconnecting randomly, and I was afraid I might have to get a new third-party modem. But after that first day it's been fucking awesome.

I have a 50 Mbps plan with Comcast and I always thought that was shitty, but no lie I'm streaming 1080p YouTube shit left and right and it's not even breaking a sweat. :whew Like I go to the video page, hit fullscreen and it auto-selects it and there's NO BUFFERING. Also, my biggest issue pre-new router of random disconnects at 1am+ are completely gone too.

Combined with my Chromecast I honestly feel confident in getting rid of my Blu-ray player soon. I won't, because The Social Network and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are stunning, but it's still tempting.

Anyways, yeah, I believe there's few things you can buy for yourself that are worth investing in more than your router (another would be your mattress.) I couldn't be happier with my RT-AC66U and it's pretty damned future proof too - dual band, 802.11AC, Gigabit. :mynicca

In fact, this router's made me want Google Fiber significantly less. THAT should tell you how much of an improvement a new router can make.

What do people think about those giant modem/router combos that Comcast has for their cable services?

I wonder...I think I need a new modem moreso than a router. It loses connection nearly daily, whereas the router seems fine. Or maybe the router causes the modem to lose connection. It's a small modem I got for free when I signed up for Comcast in college.
