I've been playing tons of FFXIV ARR lately, so I'm actually kind of jazzed about FF in general again.  I've heard great things about Type-0.  I hope the wait was worth it.

This is a day many of us were waiting for. Today, all fans of the popular PSP game “Final Fantasy Type-0″ can finally enjoy it in English. It’s been a lot of time and hard work by a wonderful team of hackers, translators and editors. After one year and a half, the result of the project is perfectly understandable, and more importantly, enjoyable.

Even though the original release date was in August, the localisation patch has reached a state where it can be perfectly played just like any other official release.

I actually wanted to hold the release a little bit longer, since there are some aspect, such as some dates in videos, that still need to be edited. However, this is a completely unimportant matter that in no way affects gameplay, or the overall experience at all. Moreover, I don’t see the point in making the entire fanbase wait even longer just for that.

So head to the project page, where you’ll fin the download link for the automatic patcher, and some extra, useful information. As always, I appreciate you feedback. I hope you all have a good time playing this game that, for many, is the true Final Fantasy XIII. Thanks to all the fans, and specially, Operation Doomtrain.

The guide on the blog says that you only need EITHER UMD then you just patch and you're good to go. Is that right? Can save me some time if I only just need a single UMD to patch.

The automatic patcher is all you need to translate your copy of Final Fantasy Type-0. Just make and ISO dump of either UMD (you can also use the Merged ISO) and select it after clicking the “patch” option. Then choose where to save the patched ISO Image and wait for the patcher to generate it. Simple as that :

Yeah I was firing up the CFW'd PSPGo, but watching someone on twitch play it on PPSSPP changed my mind. I've only ever played XII IZJS on PCSX2, but that shit looked amazing for a PS2 game.

It's as easy as putting the installer for the latest/last firmware on your memory card and running it.

It's been "mostly" finished for several months, but they've been doing beta testing on it. People were making a big deal about it on GAF back in January, thinking it was coming out any day, and then the translation team was like "lol nope, August" and then they were like "well okay, June".

I had a merged Disc 1&2 iso that I patched and it ended up ~2.7GB. Not sure if it's different if you just patch a single ISO, but I assume it's the same.

I used Disc 1 (1.7GB) and it made a 2.7GB file. Loaded fine. All the PSP system text (save/load games, etc.) are in japanese, so dont freak out...

If youre using PSP, you have to install at least 6.60 PRO-B10 since it uses a special Driver that can load such a huge game

I think you misunderstand.  "On the shelf" means it's not coming out.  I think the idea was if the Vita managed, against all hopes, to perform well in English markets that they would pursue that avenue.  It didn't, and now I think the only chance of that script seeing use is in a mobile port down the line.

No I completely understand. Business and all that. But I find it stupid Square has sat on that script for 3-4 years now. The "window of opportunity" has closed with the the fan translation release. They won't see a dime from me when they could've scrambled an iPhone port (that they're doing now because they're slow) and used that translation at least two years ago.

Eh, I think it's one of the "basic" things since you need MP for casting spells and abilities. I find the order of the tutorial to just be "off" from the basis that some of these things should be higher priority than they are.

i've read a few impressions of the game (even before the patch) and they always start by complaining about how grisly the intro is

Reason 2 (of 3): I don’t like violent, gory, grim-dark games. Never have, never will. Bombs, gunshots, dead civilians, soldiers stabbing each other in the gut, blood splattered everywhere, and the only colors the designers know are brown, red and yellow. I seriously want to puke. The intro, especially, is just nasty. Some injured guy stumbles from gory disaster to gory disaster until the enemies finally, bloodily put him out of his misery. Even then it takes him like 5 minutes to die, bawling the whole time about how he doesn’t want to die. I was wrinkling my nose in disgust and cringing at the cheesiness the whole time.

Hacking PSP is as easy as ever. Recent developments have allowed hackers to sign apps as legit, due to the "signing keys" being discovered.

Here's the current process for getting your PSP ready:

Upgrade to 6.60 OFW (the "final" version of PSP firmware released so far) -> Run 6.60 PRO-B10 (or C, whatever your choice) -> Done

This doesnt even flash anything, it's a temporary install. Once your PSP turns off, it becomes OFW again. You can flash it to be permanent, but in your case, you dont want that, and that's fine.

This is the best scenario. They wouldn't pour the resources into making two ports for the game so if Vita was a SKU we would've gotten a seriously gimped next-gen version. I'm much happier with this being next-gen only.
