I think DOOM carries fantastic momentum as the it continues, more so than most games, as it only gets better as you continue (for the most part anyway). If the game was one generic combat encounter after another, it being 12 hours would have been more of a detriment.

VEGA is my favorite stage in terms of the buildup. Not only does each encounter get more intense, but it crescendos perfectly, requiring the player to use all the skills they learned and adapt to the increasingly difficult encounters the developers keep pushing.

The two Hell stages prior to it could have been consolidated however. Too many encounters in the middle of it that felt like it was just 'there' compared to how it started and ended, which were awesome by the way. With the beginning feeling like they finally took all restraints off on the combat in terms of opposition, and the end with the Hell Guards, which was a cool as boss fight.

DOOM has been my perpetual backlog #2 for about 4 or 5 months now. I don't think I've felt gamershame in almost a decade but now I do.

Man, this game is good. At it's core the gameplay is really rewarding and satisfying, and if you strip everything down to the shooter mechanics and level design, it's a really good game. But the art direction, sound design and music are fucking tits too. Even the dumb ass story has a Paul Verhoeven-like awareness. Just great shit all around.

This is probably a bit niche for this board, but Mick Gordon's GDC talk about the music in Doom just got uploaded to YouTube. Despite typically hating Mesa-driven, super engineered, nu-metally djint shit, I loved the music from DOOM and I thought it added a huge amount to the atmosphere of the game, and as a music/sound design nerd this kinda shit is a wet dream. I really enjoyed this.

I had a feeling you might. He has a really interesting approach to effect chains and compression. It's really impressive how the sounds come out 'organically' in that manner compared to how much layering I assumed was going on. The "no guitars" evolution is so cool and I'm glad that they came out doing what they did. "I gave my nine string away after I finished the DOOM project" lmao

Also I am completely unshocked that a former NOTHING engineer was critical to forming the sound of this game
