For some reason all the music nerds are gigantic RPG japanophiles which is a real shame since there's a lot of genuinely great and sometimes superior music coming out of Western dev houses that goes completely ignored. There's some amazing music coming out of Japan but it's a small fraction of what's out there.

Shatter does indeed have a great soundtrack.

And often overlooked is Body Harvest 64's great sci-fi horror/suspense soundtrack.

Body Harvest is really underrated all the way around. It's really too bad that Rockstar went on with GTA and never came back for another Body Harvest.

Also, a lot of the best JP music is in great games, while a lot of the best Western music had to suffer being in not-so-great games. That's changed in the last ten years or so, and I do feel people are picking up on Western composers a lot more these days.

Too many western composers bite that Hollywood faux-symphonic style and/or dirgy middle-ages sounding music (especially in the 'AAA' field), neither of which I like very much. My favorite western soundtracks either tend to be catchy, gamey stuff like Amiga mod music (Turrican and any Future Crew demo), indies with chiptune soundtracks, or soundtracks that borrow a lot from EDM (Unreal, System Shock, Shatter).
