I'm waiting for impressions of the penis report: how long and hard is it?  Cuz at $16, I'm hesitant.

So far:

It's challenging. Levels have consistent themes and mechanics that are cohesive to the end. It builds upon mechanics it shows you early on and throws twists at you so you don't get to complacent.

There are two Dark Souls influences that I find interesting. 1st is that there are basically "bonfires" which are just checkpoints throughout the level. This is only a Dark Souls influence to me because it comes into play in the second, which is corpse running. When you die you lose all the gold you've collected up to the last checkpoint and you have the opportunity to go collect everything you've lost. If you manage to do this, there is no death penalty.

This is only weird to me when it comes to bosses. It's not hard to collect your gold when you die in a boss battle. So basically you can just beat your head against a boss forever until you figure out the patterns and mechanics to defeat them.

Jumping and attacking is super responsive but it IS heavier than you would expect.

All of this is literally from the first ~45 minutes so it could become garbage later on. We'll see! Having fun so far.

I've died a handful of times on the second boss until I figured out the pattern. I also died a bunch on the first challenge level that you encounter where you have to use a specific ability you purchase. It was challenging.

Compared to those games? I dunno, probably easier. It's still a modern game and it clearly has a difficulty curve that is easing up as I go.

There's a bit more to the game than simple level > level > boss > level

There are villages with shops where you can buy new weapons, health upgrades, turn in collectables for gold. There are also NPCs that give you rewards for accomplishing goals.

Bosses were really hard at PAX if I remember right. The levels I played would make a casual cry but most NES gamers would breeze through 'em, but yeah, the bosses require some skill.

well i went through the first 4 stages, mmm... it's ok, the graphics and sound are great but the actual game is a bit lacking, it does nothing bad but it doesn't do anything good either so you have this game that just feel very averagish... the stages are pretty much sets like megaman stages, each level has a theme with a "noun" knight and usualy a gimmick related to that theme, in fact some things are straightly ripped from megaman 2

spoiler (click to show/hide)
one of the level feature griffon that shoots flames exactly like the robo dogs in woodman stages, and another level feature a boss chasing you through a sidescrolling bit and then ends with you taking out the boss exactly like the mecha dragon
[close]

your health bar is huge, i currently have 8 health dots and each hits take half dot which i guess means i can take a wooping 16 hits before dying, health items are frequent and so far even though i came pretty close once, i never died because of enemies (that also means i never died on any boss) and all of my death have been instant deaths related to pits or spikes, there hasn't been a stage where i died more than thrice and in fact there have even been some stage where i went through the whole level without ever dying... on my first try! even if you die there are no lives and checkpoint are frequent (there are 5 checkpoint per stages and when you die the game shows you at what checkpoint you stopped) the only penality is that you drop some of your gold (which you use to buy new secondary weapon and power ups) but if you reach the place where you died you can pick your gold back

the stage gimmick haven't been very impressive so far we had...

spoiler (click to show/hide)
king knight = castle themed stage:  there are books that you hit which make platform appear for a while and you have to cross before the platform disappears
ghost knight = graveyard themed stage: some part of the level are covered by darkness and only appear for a brief moment when thunder strike so it's kinda like brightman stage in megaman 4
plague knight = lab themed stage: a lot of the enemies in this stage explode or throw exploding bullet which usualy ends up with part of the level being destroyed, this one felt like the most accomplished gimmick
treasure knight = underwater stage: being underwater means your jump are floaty and there are a lot of spike on the ceiling so this one is kinda like bubbleman
[close]

each stage usualy has a relic hidden that you have to buy which is a secondary weapon that you activate by pressing UP + the fire button and consume magic jars exactly like in castlevania, a lot of these are simply bullet that shoots in different direction but one of these relic is a bracelet that make you invincible for roughly 3 seconds, this might not sound much but it let you cheat several trap simply by activating it as you jump toward the trap without care

it also makes the boss even more easy since as soon as you see the boss prepare his big attack you can simply pull out your panic button instead of actualy figuring out how to dodge the attack, the item is expensive to use but once again magic pot drops frequently and your magic bar like your health bar is also huge which make the item cost a non-issue... to top it off, there is also a potion that make you invincible for 10 seconds which you can magicaly get for free from a magic fish, i seriously have to wonder why they tought putting so many effect that make you invincible was a good idea

do note that even if you don't find a relic in a level it will be avaiable to buy when you return back to the village, albeit at a higher price

the levels aren't selected like in megaman but instead you have a map a-la super mario bros 3, the map has a village zone where you can spend your hard earned cash and see your collectibles and usualy let you pick between 2 or 3 different stages, when you finish a level optional bosses starts to wander around the map in the same way the hammer bros did in case the "nudge nudge wink wink" wasn't clear enough

the bosses are great! they jump around all over the stages, their animation is super fluid and some of them have really cool effect, the treasure knight boss is a giant hulk in a underwater suit who fight by swinging a giant anchor around and i was really impressed when he jumped on top of the stage, crashed his anchor on the bottom and scattered the sand all around, unfortunately as i said so far not a single boss defeated me, your health bar is bigger than the boss so if you go into a slapfight with a boss he usualy tends to run out of health before you do and even then as i said there is a bracelet that make you fucking invincible! (well one of the optional bosses did kill me... but in my defense i was kinda looking about how much i could abuse the invincibility bracelet by spamming it more than usualy)

this game seems really suited for personal challenge rather than a playthrough for normal people, there are achievement called feats and some of them are pretty dumb like "GO THROUGH THE WHOLE GAME WITHOUT TAKING DAMAGE" and the game seems to become easier and easier the more you look at the various power ups, there is even a feature where you can get more golds in a stage by purposefully forfeiting the checkpoint by destroying them

the 7/10 review are the one doing right, the one giving it a 9 clearly don't want to disappoint the nostalgia crowd

oh and by the way so far i died 13 times and my playtime is around 2 hours (through i did go through stage 3 twice because i missed an item) so assuming it's 4 more stage plus a boss castle  i guess a 3-5 hour game isn't out of the question, there is an achievement for speed running the game in a hour and half if that can be a decent comparison

I'm 2 hours in and I've already ran into another awesome dance.

I've beaten 4 levels/bosses so far, completed a couple of options levels/fights, and arrived at the second village. Still maintain that it's fantastic. It's one of those well crafted games you fear will end too soon. Tight controls, solid level design, good pacing, and fair challenge.

Some of the levels are inspired by Zelda's design in that items recently acquired are the key to the puzzles, but I like how they still introduce bits unique the levels. For instance, I just finished the Volcano level and thought the Lava/Goo mechanic was pretty neat.

finished

total playtime - 4 hours
total deaths - 42

yeah, i stand pretty much on what i said before, the only stage where i had a little trouble was airman... pardon! propeller knight stage, where i died a great total of 9 times, 3 of which were on the boss... because he makes hole in the stage where you can fall if the boss hits you and i forgot to use the bracelet, even the final boss is a total pushover (although i still died once because... you guessed it, the final boss makes hole for you to fall into too)

the other stages

spoiler (click to show/hide)
mole knight - the fire themed stage, as shaka said the gimmick in this one is that there is lava that you can turn into jello by pushing jello blocks into it, lava instantly kills you but you bounce on the jello

polar knight - the ice themed stage, guess the gimmick? come on! guess it! did you say "the ice make you slip?" congratulation! you were right! there is also some section where you cover instant-kill spikes with snow and another thing that you have to hit that pukes rainbow for you to walk on

propeller knight - the air stage, the gimmick in this one is that the wind blows you so you have to move accordingly lest the wind push you into a pit... i'm pretty sure there are at least 2 megaman stages with a similiar gimmick with all the air themed robot the game had...

tinker knight - and finaly tinker knight, in case you were thinking i was being exagerated with the megaman comparison, tinker knight themes is gears and conveyor belts, so basicaly it's metal man, one funny thing about tinker knight it's the boss, at first tinker knight fights you one on one but he's a nerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd so he helpless flails his arm and trips around while you beat him, after you defeat him the first time he comes back with a giant robot, unfortunately the giant robot attack are super easy to predict which make this the easiest boss fight in the whole game

after defeating all of the knight you get to the tower, i tought it would be a wily castle affair with multiple bosses and stages but there is only one stage where at the end you fight EVIL shovel knight, after that there is another short stage that leads to a boss rush (because megaman games have one so we need to have one too...) one cool thing about the boss rush is that as you fight the bosses the other bosses that you still have to defeat stands in the background watching the fight, tought that was a pretty cool detail :lol

and then as i said there is the final boss, you beat it, he morphs, you beat it again, the end
[close]

it's a better game than ducktales (which is the last 2D wayforward sidescroller i played) and i had fun because in the end it's an arcade action game with really good production values that has bits and pieces from games that i loved, hovewer between the fact that it's an easy game and that it steals so much stuff from 8-bit classics it just feels kind of cheap i mean...

spoiler (click to show/hide)
one of the optional bosses is basicaly black metal simon belmont... really! that's the kind of self-wankery this game has!
[close]

if you want a game that will fuck you over, get 1001 spikes, i died more times in this random stage of 1001 spikes than i did in the whole shovel knight, shovel knight just handles crummy handjobs to megaman fans

Fwiw, I'm at 6hrs of playtime right now with at least 5 visible levels left. I haven't hit any difficulty walls yet, but I'm enjoying my time and doing all the optional stuff I can... I also may have left it sitting for an hour or so.

Either way, Magoose's run is not a barometer. He probably wanted to be done before the FBI kicks his door.

i loved it! you die often but as you can see each stage can be usualy cleared in 1-2 minutes so death never feels harsh, the end result is that you throw yourself at the stage over and over until you clear it (my clear time usualy go between 5 minute for the easier stage and 20-30 minutes for the harder one) the level aren't hard itself but there are a lot of unexpected instant kill trap so your progress is basicaly dictated by

1) guessing correctly where the traps are (which is half of the fun of the game if you ask me)
2) remembering where the trap that killed you was
3) learning how to deal with the trap that killed you

if you can do super meat boy you can probably do 1001 spikes quite as easily, unless you are ign

So... you get no health items in NG+. Instead of chicken you get a bomb. Every time.

really fun game.  good visuals, music, controls, etc etc.  half-agree with magus on the difficulty.  it's difficult enough that it isn't sleepwalk easy, but easy enough that you can get through levels without necessarily feeling challenged, if that makes sense.  it's good nostalgic game if you don't have the time or patience for older games.  but it feels intentional, like the game is well made enough that I felt they could've made it challenging if that was their goal.  an indie game like volgarr is truer to older games with its difficulty and design.  the only parts that really felt too easy / off difficulty-wise were how you could wreck bosses with the same two relics.

sounds negative by complaining about difficulty, but I did really enjoy it.  surprised it's a (ex-)wayforward game.  I might go through new game plus.

The problem with the difficulty is that you get a fuckton of health super early, and you also get two max health potions that cost you nothing and constantly replenish. So enemy/boss encounters can just be smashed through. The game is hard because of a fuckton of bottomless pits later on which aren't my idea of fun.

I'd rather have half the health available and way fewer pits, or cheap enemies that knock you straight into them.

Money is also pretty inconsequential, I bought everything pretty easily (except the gimmick gold armor that does nothing)

What's the UK release date of this game?

Waiting to be announced, while the game gets translated for our lovely European cousins:

Quote
So where are we at with these regions? There haven’t been any new developments since our previous updates. Our rating process is mostly all the way through (which is a big step, to be sure!) but localization is in progress and it must be done before we can release. The game is already capable of supporting and swapping languages, but Shovel Knight’s text itself is currently being translated to more languages.

To improve clarity, brevity, and flavor we were constantly tuning Shovel Knight’s English dialogue and menu text. Because of that we were not able to get this ball rolling sooner. Once localized and tested, we need to send it off for final approval and certification. Since all of these steps require us working with external teams, we cannot yet provide a release date for these regions. This is not due to lack of effort but instead due to lack of certainty! Just know that these releases will take more than a few days time but less than many months time. We also apologize that this discrepancy in release dates is even a part of this project! Fixing this is our top priority.

you know i called one of the optional bosses a castlevania reject because he fights with a sort of whip that he uses to swing around, but apparently these bosses were designed by people who spent more than 1000$ on kickstarter and the design is based on a rejected street fighter character called zubaz

I agree with this being responsible for messing up otherwise decently challenging sections/bosses. I find myself ignoring boss patterns and just brute forcing my way through, spamming magic items along the way, since the chalices replenish both health and magic. I'm also a little disappointed in the low weapon and armor upgrade selection. Other than that, this game is GOAT.

new game plus is weird for actually being new game plus.  everything is a little harder in that there are few checkpoints (mid and boss), no health pickups (aside from fishing and potions), and enemies do double damage.  but it brings in everything from your old playthrough so it's actually easier than normal, probably until the last few stages.

the game's difficulty is so customizable tho that i cant get mad. i dont use the potions because i dont want the game to be too easy, but i do use the checkpoints because playing thru sections over and over gets on my damn nerves. also only get upgrades when i start getting my ass kicked more than i like. its nice that i can be super easy for those that want it that way, or ball-bustingly hard for masochists too, on your first playthru no less.

I barely used any potions and the combat was still shit easy. I felt compelled to max my health so that I would have as little money as possible at all times, which made it easy all by itself. The only hard part was the death pits which is not my favorite design element in games.

Not super in love with this after a couple of stages.  Seems good, but just ok-good.  Everything is done efficiently, but:

-Bosses are piss easy
-Stages drag on for too long
-Music is no Megaman 8/9 so far

Will probably stick with it, but this isn't really blowing me away GoTY like some people are saying.  Still prefer Contra IV as my favorite WayForward.

Ok, I like this game now because I fixed it.

The game was feeling kind of not-tight controlling to me.  Has NES style slowdown and definitely not 60fps framerate and I found the controls slippery at times.  Was one of the reasons I wasn't enjoying it as much as something like Megaman with tight controls.  I had turned off v-sync option in game because Super Meat Boy taught me that in 2d platformers you do not want the extra small lag introduced by v-sync because it makes them way tougher because your jumps are slightly off.

But then I turned on v-sync in game....and suddenly the game turned into a 60fps ultra smooth platformer with perfectly tight controls.

No idea why in this case v-sync HELPS (well probably because the framerate is smooth so response times are smooth).  Weird!  But at least it's a fun game now.  I like it.

considering most of the people that are pimping this game are probably megaman fans who played this on wii u/3ds i find this comment pretty ironic :heh

the game aint some kind of massive revelation of anything; its just a real solid take on capcom's later nes games. which is great because most of these retro revivals seem to completely miss the point

Only beat the first few levels so far, but yeah this game is very fun, albeit a tad easy. One of the few games that calls back to the days of yore but successfully captures a lot of what made those games so fun.
