Since this thread got bumped...
As I said, one of my grandparents spoke Sicilian. In high school my parent had a very wealthy friend whose father was Sicilian. He made his money in
interstate trucking.
My parent thought it would be a great idea to introduce my grandparent who spoke Sicilian and their friend's father and arranged a dinner at their friend's house for this purpose. As stated earlier itt, if you don't use it you lose it, and my progenitors weren't exactly living in Bensonhurst at the time.
So my grandparent and my parent go to the dinner, my grandparent is cordial throughout the whole affair, speaks Sicilian with my parent's friend's father, everything seems to go great, etc.
Then they get in the car to go home and my grandparent goes ape shit. "[my parent's name], you are NOT to ever be alone with your friend's father, or ever be away from civilization with their family (
Ed. note - for example, on a vacation)." My parent was taken aback by this reaction and asked why they should be so mindful of their friend's father. "No one with the amount of money that your friend's father has speaks Sicilian the way he does and made that money honestly." Naturally my parent thought my grandparent was being racist as fuck and dismissed their advice, went on a vacation to [destination redacted] with them, etc.
MANY YEARS LATER my parent is reading the newspaper and sees a story about a shootout in [destination redacted] wherein their friend from high school's Sicilian father was murdered. Like his name specifically appeared in print identified as a member of organized crime. Apparently it was a mafia dust up or some such thing, very scandalous. Naturally my parent immediately picks up the phone to call my grandparent about this incident.
Upon reaching them by phone, my grandparent just said, "[my parent's name], sometimes a child should listen to their parent," and hung up on them. My parent didn't even have to tell them what had happened.

In retrospect it's not really funny that people died or that casual racism was confirmed so I apologize for indicating that this story was going to be funny.
