I've been tinkering with mods lately, but I can create a vanilla instance and check things out.

I built a little shack in the swamps near your base. It's not much, but can sustain myself there. Didn't get enough wool to build a bed though. There was a big slime there. They only used to show up underground. A slime ball and some string makes a lead, you can leash animals with it and tie them to fenceposts. Not sure when they added that.

I'm currently in the process of constructing Rumble Palace, a totally cool and secret place for awesome people and not losers. Don't tell anybody where it is if you find it.
