Well, at least Merkel deigned to speak out against it. Didn't really expect that from her. I'm hearing the counter-demonstrations are just as well attended, so that's nice.

I wouldn't get married for a long, long time after joining the military. I was married before joining, so I bypassed a lot of the drama, but that shit gets real gross. "Dear John" letters are just the tip of the iceberg. Out of all the hundreds of couples that were married post-joining that I know, only 2 of them remain married.

It doesn't hurt that you take a bunch of thrill seekers, make them get into the best shape of their lives, throw them all together and tell them repeatedly that they're likely to die soon. It's just a breeding ground for infidelity and sexual shenanigans.

you guys need to get stationed in a peaceful, foreign country

then find, impress and impregnate a foreign lady. later marry out of pressure. drag her to America when it's time to leave.

why not get married after leaving the military?

Again, "Dear John" letters. It isn't exclusive to married men/women. Couples that have one (mostly men) go into service have a high chance of the (wo)man stepping out since they're "millions of miles away." Love starts to stop happening, letter written. Etc.

We used to have mandatory military service in Germany until very recently. When it was my time to decide between military service or wiping asses in retirement homes I chose the former and got turned down. They had already narrowed their criteria so much that thin-wristed nerds like me didn't meet their standards. Basically, towards the end, they only actually conscripted a tiny fraction of people in peak physical condition. Most other people did something else, like helping out in retirement homes or delivering meals on wheels and the rest didn't have to do anything. Service duration also decreased steadily from 18 months at its longest to just 6 months before they scrapped it entirely.

It would have been an interesting experience, I think, though I doubt that it would have straightened me out much.

I knew that name sounded familiar... I remember this gem from a while ago:

Quote
I'm a heterosexual 34-year-old male and I've never experienced a single moment of genuine, mutually reciprocated, emotional/sexual contact with someone who I'm attracted to. I've always wanted to experience it more than anything; it just never happened. The more I think about it, the more angry I get inside -- and there are times (like right now, for instance) when I think about it a lot.

How can I realistically expect to get married and possibly have kids some day, when I never even had an emotional connection with a female?

Like I said, when I think about it, it p*sses me off so f*cking much.

Read the article. I can only think "who cares?" The same shit is happening with the game industry and books would do the same thing if they could have enough writers to churn out sequels to books that weren't book series. Popular things sell and will have an "iron strike while hot" effect, who knew?

I won't discount he has a point that franchises and sequels are strangling creativity in movies. They are, but on the converse: A lot of "new IP"/non-sequel/Marvel movies just don't look appealing.

I mean you get shit like Paul Blart: Mall Cop from "new IP" (which is getting a sequel... *sigh* who asked for this and went to this shit?!) or stoner films. I mean that's great and all, but that isn't going to put my ass in a seat for $7+. Same with serious fare like that... Angelina Jolie movie that's name is escaping me.

Basically, if it came down to me wanting to see a film I'd probably pick the franchise/comic book film I like over a new IP/unsure bet and that's mostly because if I'm paying $7-14 for a ticket depending on the time of day and day I go... I'd rather know I'm going to enjoy the film/IP than overpay (not including concession prices!) for a movie that I'm not sure I'd like.

For those, I'd rather just wait for DVD (hell, the same is with most comic book films/franchises. Have you seen ticket prices recently? EESH) or the Blu-ray with bonuses.

You mean in a year when we got interstellar, big hero 6, edge of tomorrow, john wick, nightcrawler, noah and birdman?

The article covers most of these. Big Hero 6 is a Disney thing (and also a Marvel IP.) Edge of Tomorrow is based on a manga (and utterly bombed, so if we're using that as a "new IP" then Hollywood will almost certainly try not to replicate it again.) Noah and Intersteller only got made because of the directors (who made Hollywood money with multiple blockbusters in the past.)

The article specifically singles out Nightcrawler and Birdman as examples of films that couldn't find funding in Hollywood.

Quote
Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice may have come from a studio, but it still required a substantial chunk of outside financing, and at $35 million, it’s not even that expensive. No studio could find the $8.5 million it cost Dan Gilroy to make Nightcrawler. Birdman cost a mere $18 million and still had to scrape that together at the last minute. Imagine American movie culture for the last few years without Her or Foxcatcher or American Hustle or The Master or Zero Dark Thirty and it suddenly looks markedly more frail — and those movies exist only because of the fairy godmothership of independent producer Megan Ellison. The grace of billionaires is not a great business model on which to hang the hopes of an art form.

An up-and-comer like George Lucas was when he made Star Wars would never be able to get the financing to make that movie today. David Lynch has been stranded outside Hollywood for almost ten years. Are we ready to actually call this a problem or are we going to put our heads back into sand?

Great movies are still getting made and will always be made in Hollywood. The problem is people are getting exactly what they think they want, when previously they didn't know what they wanted. I had no idea I wanted The Matrix until I saw it.

There will always be "New IPs" in the movie business, they don't have to be all budgeted very highly and who cares if they aren't? If you're really against it you'd pay for movies that are "new" and just torrent the big business, big franchise shit.

Well, some of the best movies I like were "new IPs" with significant budgets. Those kinds of movies are now completely dead.

Completely fresh indie stuff is fine and franchise-Hollywood stuff is fine, but I'm sad the middle ground is eroding completely.

hm. haven't read the article yet, but i agree hollywood has become crazy with adaptation. to be fair though, hollywood has always had a fascination with adaptations. almost every stanley kubrick film, for instance, is an adaptation of a book. while i agree that the comic rage has largely gotten out of hand and i'm going to enjoy it while i can, to say that hollywood hasn't had a big thing for adaptations in the past and was mostly original titles is largely false. though it can definitely be said it's significantly worse today than in the past, indie is still a viable outlet that many filmmakers are turning to.
