90% of the posters ITT are basically saying "So what? This article sucks and he should just shut up."
It makes me sad. And also a little annoyed they didn't read the article.
Read the article. I can only think "who cares?" The same shit is happening with the game industry and books would do the same thing if they could have enough writers to churn out sequels to books that weren't book series. Popular things sell and will have an "iron strike while hot" effect, who knew?
I won't discount he has a point that franchises and sequels are strangling creativity in movies. They are, but on the converse: A lot of "new IP"/non-sequel/Marvel movies just don't look appealing.
I mean you get shit like Paul Blart: Mall Cop from "new IP" (which is getting a sequel... *sigh* who asked for this and went to this shit?!) or stoner films. I mean that's great and all, but that isn't going to put my ass in a seat for $7+. Same with serious fare like that... Angelina Jolie movie that's name is escaping me.
Basically, if it came down to me wanting to see a film I'd probably pick the franchise/comic book film I like over a new IP/unsure bet and that's mostly because if I'm paying $7-14 for a ticket depending on the time of day and day I go... I'd rather know I'm going to
enjoy the film/IP than overpay (not including concession prices!) for a movie that I'm not sure I'd like.
For those, I'd rather just wait for DVD (hell, the same is with most comic book films/franchises. Have you seen ticket prices recently? EESH) or the Blu-ray with bonuses.
