I own all the PS2 onimusha games except 2 because I just blanked when it came out and much later tried to get it off amazon cheap but they never sent it to me. They just quietly refunded me the money/said they couldn't find it like eight months later. Dawn of Dreams, the one everyone hates, is my favorite in the series.

I could describe GOW3's story with those exact same words.

God of War was always more of an action adventure, rather than a pure slasher. Unfortunately the last 3rd of 3 was underwhelming as all fuck.

Haha. I do that shit all the time. Not really because it's necessary to be able to afford it, but more so as a way to trick myself into believing that I'm not spending too much money on shit I don't need. $400 in one fell swoop? Meh, that's too much money to spend considering all the gaming crap I already have that I haven't finished. But $30 a month? That's not irresponsible at all.

yeah i bought my ps4 with a credit card that hadn't had a balance in months because i "didn't want the zero balance to affect my credit score."  best reasoning i've used for an impulse buy.  the $379 + no tax TLOU bundle around Xmas time was too tempting for my Bloodborne machine.

NG2 would have been a classic if it just didn't have so many technical problems and some awful design choices in the last third or so. I like the game a lot still anyway, but I wouldn't go around recommending it etc. Theres a level where it rains blood for portion of it, that's some basic shit toku loves. It's just the whole thing is too flawed. You can tell they must have been having development issues. Often to hit later parts of a level (and even the game) and have it feel like a whole different team did it/finished it.

DMC3SE is the only game that comes close to NGB.

NG2's combat is better than NG1's, though. It's a hard choice.

Disagree strongly. NG1's combat was more defensive. While NG2's was more offensive and more toward DMC "roll around to dodge attacks" than "block attack and then punish the motherfuckers" that NG1 had. Plus, I didn't like the Obliteration Technique. Flashy, yes. But kinda ruins the momentum of using UT's.

I found that while combat is more offensive in NG2, it's mostly within the context of being defensive. Like the werewolves who'd crawl after you if you cut them in half. They'll fuck you up if they catch up to you. You're fighting 8-9 enemies at once, and it lends to more tense battle situations than were in NG1's 3-5 enemies at once.

The bosses are a big reason NG2 isn't a classic despite being amazing. They are a huge downgrade from NG1's. I find the bosses a bigger issue than the games technical problems. At the same time, it had some of the best boss battles too. The werewolf boss battle in particular.

Huh it still had that though but with the sheer number of motherfuckers attacking you at the same time, its way less effective (plus they still do the inescapable throw to punish your blocking like NG1).

I love the increased tempo of 2 but also the more balanced nature of 1 so none of them are better than the other for me.

Exactly the problem. You're facing 5+ enemies and they can guard break you easy. Blocking was pointless. You were pretty much required to pull a Devil May Cry and bat at enemies while rolling around until you could chop a limb off to OT then jump->insta-UT chain. I didn't like that change.

It's one of the reasons why I like MGRising: It felt more similar to NG1 than NG2 did.

Blocking isn't pointless and in NG1 is full of rolling, especially against kamikaze ninjas. Enemies will throw you in NGB too. Especially on harder difficulties. Everything you described are tactics that are required in NGB hard modes.

In NGB if they guard break, you roll. But the chances of Guard Breaking are farrrrr lower than NG2's even on higher difficulties. You at least felt like you could get a breather by blocking in NGB. It doesn't feel like that in NG2.

the thing about ff7 is it is bad along pretty much every dimension as measured by all the quasi-objective metrics that can be applied to games, yet it's still among the most impactful/beloved games even among people who played it much later long after any graphical wow factor had expired. so evidently there is some weird juju going on in that game.

The one great thing about FF7, when you discover the whole world outside of Midgar. I like how they pretty much suggest that's the only environment in the game until then*. Wait, also the crossdressing.

I think for a lot of people it was their first AAA RPG.

*Borderlands had a bit of a similar moment to me with the Dahl Headlands drastically expanding the potential scope of the game.

What are the objective merits of games though? On a technical and visual level, yeah, FFVII isn't a looker at all. When it comes to gameplay, its pretty damn simple, but so is every Final Fantasy before it (and after it really). The soundtrack, writing, character cast, those still hold up. FFVII has a very distinct identity.

Final Fantasy 8 reminds me of The Backstreet Boys and Nsync, in fact every teenage girl nerd fucking loves FF8 (and FFX). FF8 is on the same level as FFXIII, except XIII actually has excellent combat.

Really though, when it comes to bashing/loving FFVII and FFVIII, when's the last time most of us actually played either game?

:hitler

I booted up FFVII a while ago and I was shocked how well written the game is compared to JRPGs of late. It feels like characters interacting with each other while the story moves forward naturally, rather than character themselves moving the story forward by talking about how to move the story forward.

The soundtrack in FFVII is also baller.

Flying Lotus didn't remix an FF8 track in his sets, put it that way.

What the fuck
I already really dig FFVII's fanfare and Flying Lotus separately, them together?

:aah :noah

VII has a lot of bullshit in the last 1/3 or so, but there's so much great shit that happens to all of the cast. The red doggie finding out what his father did, Cid's whole deal with building a rocket and flying, Barret losing a friend in a Desert prison.

Great premise
Music
Spirit of adventure
Time travel is fun
Fun characters
Great pacing, not one boring section
Innovative battle system and lack of screen transition
Short length, can be beaten in 20 hours all quests done
Replayability in multiple endings and choices
Innovative new game +

Just good old fashioned shit. Pretty pure an experience, and it has mastery of many elements many games - especially RPGs - struggle with such as pacing, or no replay value. As far as pacing goes, Chrono Trigger is cream of the crop whether jrpg or wrpg. As far as battle systems go, many modern jrpgs still have screen transitions and CT is 20 years old.

In terms of innovation, fun, and charm, pretty hard to beat.

Pretty succinct answer, thank you for laying it out this easily.

I think I'm just picky as fuck when it comes to JRPGs, I've tried many, but have only really enjoyed a few.
OH!

I suspect you're the type who finishes inside his partner in 55 seconds and imagines he/she had a very gratifying experience.

There's an actual reward for doing good there though. As in more sex. I must stress I do my utmost, even if I have a tendency to premature ejactulation.  :goty2

I don't like hard video games. I just want to win.
It's called content tourism. The preferred action game series for this is God Of War.

Easy or not easy, GoW is still shit. Metal gear rising on easy though. :lawd
