Yeah, if memory serves the challenges in Black Flag are less frustrating, save for the "social" collectables that appear randomly across a ton of different locations. I used this GameFAQs thread to generate a list of a dozen or so coordinates for each collectable type (chest/whale/convoy) and just kept cycling through them until something showed up, which can take hours solo as the idea is that you're supposed to play the game at the same time as your friends since the locations of anything they find are automagically shared with you.
