When I was 18 I had 3 choices....go to work....go to college.....or get the fuck out.
Old school.
Maybe it's an american thing. But I have no problem with my kids coming to stay with me if they need to get a leg up on life.
Hell, I just learned that a lady joined my company and moved herself from India to the US (leaving her husband behind) so that she could be in the city that her daughter is going to school in. When taken in comparison to that, letting your kids stay with you if they need seems pretty minor.
Yeah, America and a few other places have the whole "you live with your parents past 18, you're a loser bum!" mindset, and thus some parents may just kick them out. That's of course changing with the economy and other factors like there being more jobless recluses in general, with some saying 30 might be the new cut-off point for a lot of people. I know in cultures like Indian and IIRC Mexican (not 100% sure on that though), it's not a big deal to just live there, though being jobless is still looked down on. Had a 38 year old Indian professor in college that said he lived with his parents and that no one he's met outside America judged him negatively for it, with him possibly inheriting the house down the line.
I lived with my parents until last year (26) when I managed to get a super good deal for my own house. Still come back to my parent's house often to see what's going on and say hi to the dog.
