As a medium I don't think many games set out to try to be art but it would be foolish to say that certain games don't aspire to be more than just game and want to be seen, taken, and treated as artistic expression. Of course, it's all subjective, but I don't understand the basis of the argument because despite any preconceived opinions on games artistic merit or quality, many still try to be that. Because Super Mario exists doesn't take away from the fact that Monkey Island is an artistic gaming milestone. It isn't as black and white as many seem to try to make it and it's really never worth debating.
