I agree wholeheartedly to every sentence, but I think nuance and context will not go well in this thread until it ends up locked.

For a more serious if cursory look at issues facing women in Japanese culture, NPR's Planet Money did a quick piece about the need for robotic nannies in Japan, which is ostensibly because women are expected to completely give up their career in order to care for their children (not unlike America prior to the 70s). This in turn makes career women wait longer to raise children or not choose to do it at all, which in turn affects the birth rate, and will perpetuate an imbalance to having a costly older population needing care. All of this also factors into Japan's stringent immigration walls, when immigrants tend to take a significant role in professional child care in other first world nations.

These are pretty serious issues with ramifications that strike at the current and future economy of Japan as it relates to culturally stacking the odds against women, but VICE picks its battles and I suppose the more entertaining route is "lolololol japan akiharbara's porn section has porn, self-selected advertising employment by high school girls is universally immoral."

Now if you excuse me, I have to go find a jailbait subreddit and congratulate Hobby Lobby on their facebook page for denying female employees birth control. Thank god I'm living in god's country

 :what

Vice just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but child sexualization is a huge part of it.

OK, so regardless of how you feel about anime, unless how you are going to talk about how it is specifically exempt from/demonstrative of Japan's issues with sexuality and sexual health, please don't post about it. If you think it is great or terrible or whatever, it's not relevant unless you make it so so please don't.

At least I didn't create a post that exceeded the character limits and had to split it into three in order to fit all the links/quotes from various sources of evidence.

Oh wait, I thought you said "last couple pages." Never mind.

I think it's entirely appropriate to cringe at some of the stuff that people publicly do. I can't go whole hog into "everyone grieves in their own way." Some stuff is just completely tacky or classless.

Can we be too cynical here, sure, yes, all of the time, especially my ass. But really there are just some things I can't help but roll my eyes at. Making a spectacle of this kind of thing always gets a side eye from me. At some point it becomes less about the person who died and people making it about themselves, trying to one up each other and speaking on behalf of the dead in "tribute" to them.

I honestly get kind of disturbed by the whole thing.

Like most things on GAF, you get a sense of oneupmanship, like you have motherfuckers competing for who is the most sad about Iwata dying.  I would say that they'd look back with embarrassment at the posts they're making in a couple of days but these people have no shame.

(reluctantly) Considering leaving Android for iOS

At least no more Samsung phones.

I've been on Android for the last four years after leaving iOS in 2011 cause I was tired of the small screen and inflexibility of the OS. Since then, I've been mostly happy with Android, going from the HTC One X to the Note 2 and now Note 4.

But I have to admit that I am tired of the slow OS updates and the janky performance of Android, especially Samsung Android phones. My Note 4 even with 3 gigs of ram has random freezes and chokes on any website with Java. I'm still waiting and wondering on when if ever I'll get OS updates. In the meanwhile I find myself ogling the amazing buttery smoothness of iPhone 6 when I see people using them on the street.

At this point I'm tired of supporting an OS that just doesn't seem to have its shit together even after being on the market for almost 7 years. If I'm paying almost a thousand bucks for a phone I want perfect performance. I want the latest OS updates as soon as they come out.

Maybe things might be better with a nexus phone, but for now I'm done with Samsung and possibly Android, at least for a while. Hell, Google seems to support iOS better than Android anyway. So other than Google Now I don't expect to miss much.

I don't like homemade food.

I'm one of those people who would love to get take out and restaurant foods 95% of the time, 4% frozen meals, and 1% be polite and eat what the host decided to cook. In reality, I'm stuck doing about 92% sandwiches and frozen food since I hate cooking, 8% polite consumption of homemade attempts. I just think restaurants and such do better. I yearn for In N Out, not whatever you attempted.

Right. But Java is still used in some business apps isn't it? Reason why some are still using IE7(?) which blows my mind. app makers don't update legacy stuff and these companies are so dependent on it they don't demand the companies that make the app or someone else to build a new one.

I won't lie, the GQ spread they did with him for last month looks good (but I prefer the Texan/Red and Black look they did with him for the December '14/end of the year "Men of the Year" shoot) but those prices, though... :larry I wish there was a fashion magazine for men that had middle-class price ranges.

Eh, I'm not saying it has to be Target-level stuff: Something this price range while still a little pricey is muuuuuch easier on the wallet because it's $400 less for a goddamn Jacket than what GQ wants (though this one is for the winter really). Like "slightly above middle class but if you save for it you can at least not break the bank" level stuff.

Edit: Also yeah, Asos would work. But I dunno if the "Fashion mags" could make spreads from that sort of stuff. :shrug

you're never going to find niche stuff like that in fashion magazines, at least not mainstream ones. they don't even feature stephan schneider, which is IMO probably one of the more reasonably priced 'fashion' brands out there that still manages to be directional and accessible (aesthetic-wise)
