DOOM
« on: July 20, 2014, 03:01:23 PM »

What is known so far:

-Fast-paced and violent combat
-Several classic weapons returning: plasma rifle, double-barreled shotgun, chainsaw
-Several classic enemies returning: imp, revenant, mancubus
-Completely over-the-top close-combat kills on weakened enemies
-Ability to climb railings and onto crates
-No flashlight was shown but it wasn't needed
-Enemies teleported in, but appeared to be at preset locations
-Lots of corridors, but locations were very large to give the impressions of the playable area being larger than it was [not confined like Doom 3]
-Graphics were pretty good, but still rough in a few places [likely that will change some between now and whenever it's released
-No reloading and no recharging health
-Small, annoying enemies and larger, more dangerous enemies
-Some of the larger, boss-type enemies had unique close-combat kills [including at least one directed at the player]
-Some dark humor [ex: while the PC was wielding the chainsaw, a demon tried to block the blade with its arms; a handprint was needed to unlock a door, so the PC ripped the hand off a nearby corpse]
-At least part of the game takes place on Mars
-Multiplayer was mentioned as being included, but it wasn't shown
-Brand new engine [id tech 6]
-The gameplay demo ended with a door opening to reveal the cyber demon shown at the end of the teaser

Also relevant:

-id recently announced the hiring of Tiago Sousa, formerly R&D Principal Graphics Engineer at Crytek

Release date is currently unknown.

There were literally gallons of blood and guts flying everywhere while the player exploded, punched, kicked, and sliced enemies to peices.

Sounds like to me they have used a bunch of ideas from brutal doom, I hope they give credit to SgtMarkIV because he was the one to take doom to this level. It would be a real shame to see them steal community ideas for there own use.

its a great port, despite what pc-hyping scum have said. looks super smooth, you can actually see in the dark now, the character moves faster, and there are more ammo pickups. makes it a real action game now. also the expansion they included with doom 2 is fucking AMAZING and seriously some of the best classic doom levels i have ever played.

The official line from Bethesda PR is that there probably won't be anything put out into the public space before next year.

I hope Doom is colorful, the original has such great art direction (not being sarcastic)

Wasn't really paying attention to color and art direction too much, but part of one level was lit by massive pools of molten metal and occasionally you could see structures in the facility looming over you that appeared to be hundreds [if not thousands] of feet tall.

Hugo Martin, the Art Director for Doom, was a principle concept artist for Pacific Rim, The Avengers, and Uncharted. :hyper

Speaking of the original games, Greg Punchatz was at the show and I was fortunate enough to talk shop with him. He's the guy who designed the Arch-Vile, Mancubus, Revenant & Spider Mastermind. He's also the son of the guy who did the amazing Doom cover art.
