I made my parents watch the opening scene of TLOU...
« on: August 09, 2014, 07:32:33 PM »
I was setting up all my PS4 stuff when my parents came in, and I was going to turn it off but I was like "whatever" cuz they already know I'm nerd so it's not like I have to hide it.

They just didn't have all the context, they need to see the rest of the game.

Though you might want to show them Uncharted first to get them prepared for what Naughty Gods can pull off emotionally.

My mom keeps asking me if I talk with my brother on eBay and Facemail. Which makes me want to start a social networking/auction site called Facemail.

couple years ago I was playing MLB The Show at home and my dad thought I was watching baseball on TV.  I was like "this is a video game. the graphics are amazing." and his response was "wow you're still playing those games? how old are you?"

Not that my parents think I'm an adult, but I at least cover my ass by asking them for Heiner Muller collections at the holidays.

When I worked in the industry I was always surprised at the assumptions  "regular" people made when they found out what I did.

The two most common were that every game was essentially a GTA style murder/prostitute simulator.

The other being that man all I did all day was probably dick around instead of the hard work they had to endure. This, when I was regularly working 80 to 100 hour crunch weeks/months. I had to bite my tongue alot.

Yeah, I got that a lot: "It must be nice to sit around and play games all day! LOLz0r!" -- the Japanese office I worked at for over 10 years had a no shoes policy so people could sleep on the floor.

I'm still surprised when my non-game clients make reasonable requests and aren't trying to actively undermine efforts to meet the agreed-to schedule.

When you're done testing that level, I need you to tighten up the graphics on level three.

Sleeping on the floor must really be normal at Japanese companies, heard the same story from my old boss about their office in Tokyo.

I wish I knew the name of it, but there's this great 1980's era video about American companies trying to learn from the Japanese. And one of the big segments is on sleeping tubes as the wave of the future in the workplace.

Since I can't find that, just watch Gung Ho, because I love that movie.

I never slept at work, and insisted on going home on the last train every night, which ran at 00:08, IIRC. The guys who had chosen to live close to the company had it the worst because they'd sometimes just go home long enough to shower and sleep for a couple hours, then come back in. Those were the guys who had nervous breakdowns.

I'd work one weekend day, but not both. I only worked both weekend days once, which gave a 12-day consecutive overtime run, and I realized I'd been right to refuse it out of hand up until then, and never did it again.

Companies will take whatever you're willing to give them; it's up to each of us to stand up for ourselves in the face of unreasonable and irresponsible requests.

It's too bad the industry chews through its most experienced workers this way.

Don't you get it? You're mom saw that The Last of Us is really something quite special. Something quite monumental. Of course it doesn't look like a game. No! Because The Last of US goes for beyond any game. It elevates games to another level. It sets the new bar and now games have to raise to it's level. When she said "it dosen't look like a game", what she meant is that doesn't look like the childish manchild stuff that came before, no this looks like art. Fitting because The Last of Us is art. The art that everything shall now be compared to.
