Time to build a new tax deductible PC, brehs
« on: August 12, 2014, 04:58:21 PM »
This is what I'm thinking so far. I don't really need to viciously pimp it out but could I guess. Suggestions welcome. (smooth groove not)

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/LgfmNG

(note- there's only one 4 gb stick of RAM because my boss was supposed to buy me more RAM for my existing computer- he should have bought 2 x 2 gb sticks but bought 1 4 gb stick, so I'm just gonna shove it in the new pc)

It's only deductible if it's ordinary and necessary. :wag

Add an SSD to the build, they're worth it. I'd recommend something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147248&cm_re=samsung_ssd-_-20-147-248-_-Product

do you live anywhere near a microcenter? they're still offering i7s at i5 prices if you can wade through the malodorous glut of other people.

neat, pick this up then: http://www.microcenter.com/product/413248/core_i7_4770k_35ghz_socket_lga_1150_boxed_processor

and put a little extra grunt into your GPU.

i think nvidia are announcing the 8xx series any day now, which will likely shake prices up a bit. for the thrifty purchaser, often the best time to buy a new GPU is in the period between a new card being announced and actually getting released.

Would my rig depreciate on a 15 year or 30 year schedule?  Time to get that WBS going.

Considering that I work from home 100% of the time on my pc, it is absolutely ordinary and necessary.

The ordinary part of ordinary and necessary means that the purchase was ordinary in its character in comparison to similar businesses, not that it's ordinary for someone in your business to make a purchase like that; for example, it would be ordinary for a luxury automobile rental company to purchase Ferraris as business property but it would not be ordinary for the the shell company that leases autos Ye Olde Mom and Pop's Dildo Shoppe for the use of its executives to buy a Ferrari as business property.

No one's going to audit you, but just sayin'.

Well, I have to interact with customers online in a video game client, so it's gonna qualify I think.

Under MACRS computers are depreciated over 5 years.

I don't know what its useful life would be under GAAP or IFRS off the top of my head, probably something close to that but not 200 DB.

As an employee? Not unless it was part of a uniform, but it would be subject to the 2% AGI limitation and you'd have to itemize deductions.

As a person engaging in a business in the fashion industry? Maybe if your business was of a certain lucrativeness and you could demonstrate that it was solely for engaging in business activities. Musicians have performance wardrobes and all those clothes are allowable deductions because they're necessary and ordinary for (certain kinds) of musicians.

Well, I have to interact with customers online in a video game client, so it's gonna qualify I think.

Ah, then (to an extent) you'll be OK. From your posts in PoliBore I had the impression that you primarily did bookkeeping and administrative work.

i still say bump up that GPU. you saved a few quid on your CPU and got a screamer. would be a shame not to match it with something like a 280x if you can get one for a good price.

That's not a bad idea, considering a 280x is just like another Franklin more than a 660...

AMD are having some event next saturday where they'll probably/maybe announce something: http://www.amd.com/en-us/press-releases/Pages/amd-to-celebrate-2014aug14.aspx

bear in mind get borderline autistic about trying to get the right parts at the right time and it's probably not healthy to emulate it.

You lucky bastard. I paid that much for a 4gb 270x 3 months ago. Take a picture of it next to your old video card for the lulz.

What is currently the best ~$150 videocard for people with  case space and power supply concerns?  I currently have a Dell XPS 730 with a stock power supply, and probably not enough room for a very long videocard.

It has a Dell i5 Core i5-2300 (2.8 Ghz).  I'd obviously like something that is powerful, but not something that leaves me CPU bound.  My main concerns are console ports at 1080p/60fps and emulation of 3D systems (Dreamcast, PS2, Wii).  I don't really care about being able to run Battlefield or Skyrim or Crysis at insane settings.  1080p is important, but I'm really more interested in 60fps.  Don't care that much about graphical effects.

I was considering getting some variant of the Geforce 750 Ti, but I'm thinking I might be able to bump it up to something better.

Until the 800 series cards are released later this year, the 750ti is still your best bet for that price range. It's also small and low wattage.

What would the best variant of the 750 Ti be?

If I wanted to wait on the 800 series, would there be significantly more performance there?  Would they be low-space low-power cards as well?

Zotac just announced a 750 Ti that runs entirely off of passive cooling -- no fans, and I was kinda interested in that.  It'd be could to have a PC that doesn't sound like a jet engine when games are playing.

The first round of 800 series cards will probably just be the high end ones (870 & 880), but they might drop the prices on the 760's after the 800's hit.
