Corey Griffin, a philanthropist who was instrumental in making the ALS ice bucket challenge fund-raising drive go viral, has died after drowning in a diving accident off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts.

The 27-year-old's life was cut tragically short on Saturday (16 August) when he dove off a wharf that serves as a popular diving perch for locals, resurfacing once before disappearing back under the water and drowning.

i had the equivalent in the UK - we used to be able to get a loaf of bread for 14p and 10 cans of baked beans for 10p ()

turkey mince was dirt cheap, as was pasta.

and there we go - rest of cash for emergency commutation to Uni (i used to just walk) and then other supplies.

The ALS Association has raked in more than $94 million in donations from the ice bucket challenge in just under a month. Now, the organization is asking for something else: Trademarks to the phrases “ice bucket challenge” and “ALS ice bucket challenge.”

Well it's not like I'm a happy irl optimist, but people do have a weird perception of charity operations. (e.g. The hullabaloo post-9/11 when people found out that charities use donations to cover overhead as well as administer programs. Quelle horreur.)

I'm also a big fan of the people who don't realize that not being run for profit doesn't mean they have to actually make a profit. This was really funny during the whole "take your money out of a big for-profit bank and put it in a credit union" thing awhile back since the credit unions just loaned that money back to big for-profit banks.

When I look over non-profit financial statements at the end of the year to make sure the bookkeeper didn't I always calculate the percentage of actual executive pay as a percentage of revenue and expenses to amuse myself / keep myself a bitter husk of a human being.

(In small non-profits executive pay is often allocated as being expenses related to the non-profit's expressly states purpose, i.e. program spending when in reality it's executive pay.)
