The US changed that day. Shit used to be so much better, and that isn't nostalgia speaking. As for 9/11, I remember a ton of details about how my day went. It didn't affect me personally tho.

EDIT: We went home early too. It was my freshman year and school started like the week before.

That summer I was lamenting how awful that season of films were. I remember getting drug to see The Fast & The Furious and not caring for it. Years later I'd realize it was the only decent summer flick that year. JPIII, Planet Of The Apes, Spirits Within were dogshit. I remember seeing Spirits Within and convincing myself that it was good. Me, my bro and his friend joy rode while listening to Alien Ant Farm's "Smooth Criminal" and System's "Chop Suey". I kept convincing myself Swordfish wasn't a piece of shit. When it released on VHS that October it had a warning label about terrorist content. I knew we were fucked then.

Fuck. I knew I said nostalgia wasn't at play but fuck.

I was never a huge GAFfer (don't think I bothered registering until like '05/06 and it wasn't even in my web rotation at the time) but the fact that I first heard it there fills me with great shame. So yes, every year the "where were you X years ago" fills me with deep sadness, but not for the reasons most would think.

I think the thread started thinking a Cesna had crashed into it or something.

Music circa '99 till 07 was complete garbage. Some good spots here and tehre but most were underground, mainstream music was at it's worst.

I never got this "music from this period to that period sucked" thing. Also rock was still passable in that period.

1999? more like 2005. There were still good songs and music on the radio 1999-2005. How can Wratch objectively say 1999 was bad anyways? Wasn't he like 7 years old?

In bed with my college girlfriend, sleeping. Got a call from my mom to turn on the TV. Our cable hadn't been installed yet, so we just hadn fuzzy broadcast networks.

My university didn't cancel classes that day, which was a bad idea. No one could focus.

I'm not doing the "where were you?" thing this year. 9/11 launched a platform to take away citizen rights in the name of security and freedom. We started a war - two wars -  over one terrorist attack. We fucked up an semi-stable part of the world because of it, leaving them off much, much worse. I won't participate in giving 9/11 credence nor credibility. It's sad that the people died, but the way Americans tell it, it's something worth celebrating and remembering rather than focusing on what created it, as well as the flood of negative it brought to this country and the world.

I was living at home at the time while going to college (washington state), woke up to the news report and saw the second plane. was very, very surreal. had never seen anything like that live. I can't remember if class was canceled or not but I'm sure it was, I doubt anyone could concentrate. I do remember some people being really upset because they had family in the area.

however, I also forgot this happened today. it's not something I actively keep in the memory banks.

2001 was my last year of homeschooling. My dad was at work and my mom was in Chicago to visit family. I took a break from doing schoolwork (one of the few benefits of homeschooling) and decided to go upstairs and make a snack. I remember feeling like something was wrong because I couldn't hear any lawn care folks working onside; usually our  suburban block was full of the sound of grass being cut of mulch being dropped all summer. Turned on the TV and saw the first tower on fire, saw the second plane hit, etc. I remember a station wondering if other buildings would be targeted, and mentioning the Sears tower in Chicago...I almost had a heart attack brehs. I couldn't contact my mom but eventually talked to my dad.

My mom called awhile later to say she was ok.

This was the end of innocence.  America got exposed here, like an overpaid sports prospect from south america. Our economy never recovered. Domestic policing. Racial animus from this and Obama elections. Adults could never explain why we got attacked properly. These stupid ass wars. I wonder how the history books will look at this period.

In music terms it's the equivalent of the post-Terminator X years of Public Enemy. Flashes of brilliance but mainly lots of meh.

I was in the car driving into work and turned on the "wacky morning show" and heard them talking about how a plane hit the world trade center and I was like "Man that's in really poor taste." thinking it was a joke. Then they came back from commercial and they were still talking about it. So I called my coworker who was already at work and asked him what was going on. He didn't know. I told him to go to CNN.com and he tried and couldn't get there.  I was like "Oh shit". By the time I got the work parking lot the second plane hit.

Word. No parent should be letting their young, impressionable child play Halo software. You should have pulled him aside and given him a copy of Quake III instead (which of course you carry around at all times).
of course. shame I have to run quakelive on bootcamp now :(

Every decade has a symbolic hair cut. What would it be for the 00's? Frosted tips? Dreadlocks? That weird zebra striping that trashy white women do?

----

I was stuck in a factory when 9/11 happened. We weren't able to see the images and only heard a few reports, so we were all making crude jokes the whole day long. It wasn't until we got home and saw all the images that we felt pretty bad making fun of it.

My mentally distinguished mentally-challenged, inbred labrador ate my mom's car keys and we had to find the spare ones.

When I got to school (pretty sure I was in 5th grade at this time) I was already 3 hours late. And I was thinking to myself "how can this day get any worse?" since I was quite an academic student and being late to school was one of my fears. Then my 4th room teacher basically told us that school was going to let out early today due to the attacks on the WTC in NYC.

At that time, I had no clue that those 2 really tall buildings (among some others) were call the World Trade Center towers. When I got home CNN was on (oh yeah, this was prior to my parents only watching Fox News. Haha) and I saw those two towers billowing smoke and they were showing replays of the planes hitting.

Then everything else in my memory is just a blur of GWB talking about terrorists, they hate our freedom, blah blah blah, american flags everywhere, "God Bless America" being sung all the time,  :usacry, etc.

Black people are GOAT in this regard. Caesar cut or a fade never go out of style. And even the worst shit we've done, like fake 360 waves, are better then the frosted tip fuckery of the 90s.

I just got home from school, turned on my old telly (one of those things encased in wood, with turn-knobs for buttons), and had my afternoon snack.
It was like something out of an action movie, but being a Swede and a 12 year old I didn't really care for it.

Was getting ready for my first exam. Then my mom called from the IRS they went into lockdown while I was on the phone with her. The phone clicked and silence so I turned the TV on. Saw the second plane hit live on TV. I was in shock as I'd never seen anything like it. The amount of destruction and seeing people jump from the buildings. I didn't go to my classes that day.

I didn't see my mom till the next day after lockdown was lifted. I ended up ordering pizza and they were giving it away for free. the owner thought that people had been through enough for a day and could use some comfort. I gave the delivery guy the money as a tip. Drank some crown royal and coke that night.

:larry I will admit to rolling around in brothers car one summer listening to Hybrid Theory in Sun River, pretty good memory. It's a resort town near Bend, OR. Sneaking out at night to ride bikes in the full moon :rejoice

Older brothers friend buying you cloves :rejoice

I'll never forgot the story of my close friend back then who after having his N64 unplugged mid-game by his mother, screamed SHUT UP WHEN I'M TALKING TO YOU in her face and ran off to his room crying.

Man, I hated awkward family shit going down when I was at someone else's house.  :shaq2
