I bought a bottle of St. George vert. My first green absinthe. :uguu

Shit is SIXTY PERCENT ALCOHOL BY VOLUME which I did not know until I looked at the label while putting it in my trunk. :dead

Canadian Absinthe situation is still woeful, but luckily we have Herbsaint which is essential to a good Sazerac.

Hmm, $69.99 at BevMo for a 750 ml bottle of the St. George. That's a bit steep, but I'm intrigued.

When I try a new one I start with a 200 mL. (1) That's more than enough to last awhile since a shot will put me down for the night on most nights and (2) I don't want to invest that much money upfront on a new marque in case I don't like it or I do something idiotic like buy a Bohemian-style. (That almost happened to me today. Thanks for saving my ass, based Wormwood Society message board I was searching while in BevMo on 2G. :whew)

Anyway, St. George has a distinct lemon flavor which was interesting, you smell it right away when you pop the cork. From my understanding, vertes are the color they are because of an additional infusion of herbs after distilling; however, I didn't feel like St. George was as herby as Kubler (a blanche) is, but I have a bad feeling that since Kubler was my first I think it's how all absinthe should taste since I found La Clandestine had the same problem.

Absolutely subjective opinion, but I don't really think the louche on a verte looks nice.

Do you like anise? If you don't your only real choices are Bohemian-style which I have no experience with because I love anise almost as much as I love fucking up my life. (Reviews will be unhelpful too as drinkers have a profound antipathy for Bohemian-style, heaven forbid people not like anise.)

If you like / don't mind anise, I'd start with a 200 mL of La Clandestine. It's a very distilled absinthe (like a nice--not necessarily expensive Esch :comeon--vodka) so you can decide if you like the "base" flavor of the drink, and, if you do, you can then work your way into more challenging (i.e. less distilled / clean) offerings.

Even though it's kind of encouraging bad behavior (the distiller is milking the prestige of a marque from the late 19th century without really backing up their claim) I think I'm going to try nu-Pernod Fils next. Sucks that you can't get it in 200 mL to my knowledge though, at 80 clams a bottle I'm going to have to save for like two months to buy that. :shaq2

I have half a 1.75 of Bacardi left, and a whole bunch of juice. I think I'll be cocktailing it up tonight, playing Dark Souls until I get too drunk to beat the enemies.

That’s negative-one beers for me.  :'(

Had Calvados for the first time recently. It's just not-as-shitty slivovitz, but has a good reputation and decent cost of entry which baffles me. It's amazing what you can get people to overpay for by saying it's from France. *takes a sip of Pernod Fils*

Slivovitz is a special thing. Pretty sure Jews drink it as atonement for imagined or real sins. That's what I use it for anyway.

Thanks to Kara bringing it up and there being a specialty booze store next to my work I grabbed a bottle of sliv (Serbian, which I've never had before) and some Becherovka and tonic. Been a bit since I've had either so I'm excited to get home and break them open.

Why does it always have to be about guilt with the Tribe huh? Why can't we just like drinking an absolutely godawful spirit that isn't even really ours?

Oh yeah, Manischewitz is why. :shaq2

Bought a bottle of Leopold Brothers absinthe verte. It's good, and having a batch number on the bottle is deliciously decadent, but I feel like American absinthes try too hard to inundate you with strong herbs and miss that crisp, cool taste Franco-Swiss product has.

The bottle is super ghetto, which I like.

Don't really have brand recommendations just don't go cheap. Whatever you usually spend on booze, go at least $20 on top when you're looking at tequila. I can and still do all types of cheap liquor but I refuse to believe there is any kind of tequila that's sub $35 - 40 that's drinkable.

Not a fan of silver tequila, gold only. Jose Cuervo is quite generic but is my favorite brand. Silver is probably more shot friendly in taste for most though, so it depends on how you're gonna drink it. But Patron is good for silver. Try Don Julio if you can get your hands on it. Pretty good stuff. :lawd

I have been bequeathed the liquor collection of a good friend, who had been collecting stuff in Japan for decades. One of the items is a triangular-bottled 10-year Glenfiddich Pure Malt in a very old looking cylindrical tin. My first thought is that this is from some era before Glenfiddich exported single-malts, as there was a time when it was considered too rarified a taste. So my assumption is that this is a blend, so I don't have high hopes.

I have a drink. It is magnificent.

I have another drink the next day. It wasn't my imagination, it is really, REALLY good. I look more closely at the bottle. It says it's from 1974. Investigating on the web, I haven't found a perfect match on it, but what I'm seeing so far is that it's no longer bottled this way, hasn't been for decades.

I'm going to treat it a little more reverentially from here on out, and toast my departed friend each time.

Picked up Martell blue Swift today; ‘cognac finished in a bourbon barrel’. Definitely inherits some of the bourbon feel and notes, but I don’t think this will unseat Remy 1738 for me in this price range.

Nikka Whisky From the Barrel

It's nice but the price is a bit steep for what you get. Think it's like half the price in Japan itself. Good value over there.

Only stand-out thing to me seems to be the finish. Great lingering chocolate raisin aftertaste.
