Segata/Oscar, you still post here? Yakuza questions
« on: October 14, 2014, 01:36:34 PM »
I got back playing Ishin a week ago and finished it the other day.  Game was fun and I enjoyed the story & music, but what the hell padded grindy F2P-like experience has the series become!?  They totally gimped the combat mechanics, forcing you to grind for dozens of hours of combat arenas just to get some of the useful battle mechanics and heat moves (of which there are far fewer than back in the day).  And if you wanted to actually upgrade your weapons/armor in the game it was a total F2P-style grind item drops to the point that even 34 hours in the game when I finished it after about 6 additional hours of just grinding, I still never made a good sword.

So is this what RGG games are like these days?  Having only played 1/2/Kenzan before this, I miss the simplicity of RGG1/2 where you have a fun 12-15 hour story with like an additional 10 hours of optional subquests and some mini-games and that was it.  No bs rpg grind game.

How's the padding/filler/grind in

RGG3
RGG4
RGG5
Black Panther
Black Panter 2
Of the End

3 should have been the last Kiryu game. Pretty sure Oscar would say the same thing since we've talked about this many times. A lot of that "filler" that people complain about in 3 is what we both enjoy as character development. I can't speak for him, but the Okinawa sections of the game are refreshing for the franchise and it's the Kamurocho sections that feel like retreads.

Don't forget that Oscar isn't the only one here who plays through the Ryu ga Gotoku games!  :D

Bebpo isn't talking about filler side story stuff.

Ishin is the first one to implement this system. 3, 4 and Of the End are what you're looking for. 5 lacks the grind, but it has ridiculously long cutscenes.

yeah, I don't know what you mean about Ishin but 3 and 4 felt like 2 to me.  although if you want to complete everything, 4's whole thing is playing as 4 different characters.

4 has the same length, you just split the time up between four characters. RGG5 does the same thing, but the game itself was much longer.

just the story stuff, yeah, it's only a little longer than 3.  if I'm remembering the completion times correctly, maybe two hours or so longer.  it's if you want to do absolutely everything that sounds like a time sink.
