Hatred? Uh...

Grimdark Hotline Miami. :larry

Developer quotes from their site:
Quote
We proudly announce our first game – Hatred. As the first propaganda tool, we’ve created this trailer, purely consisting of in game footage. Scroll down to ‘Games’ section of our site for detailed information about the project. More news, videos and screens straight from our game soon!
:heh

Quote
Hatred is an isometric shooter with disturbing atmosphere of mass killing, where player takes the role of a cold blood antagonist, who is full of hatred for humanity. It's a horror, but here YOU are the villain. Wander the outskirts of New York State, seek for victims on seven free-roam levels. Fight against law enforcement and take a journey into the antagonist's hateful mind. Gather equipment of the dead ‘human shields’ to spread Armageddon upon society. Destroy everything on your way of hunt and fight back when it's disturbed...

...just don't try this at home and don't take it too seriously, it's just a game. :)

The question you may ask is: why do they do this? These days, when a lot of games are heading to be polite, colorful, politically correct and trying to be some kind of higher art, rather than just an entertainment – we wanted to create something against trends. Something different, something that could give the player a pure, gaming pleasure. Herecomes our game, which takes no prisoners and makes no excuses. We say ‘yes, it is a game about killing people’ and the only reason of the antagonist doing that sick stuff is his deep-rooted hatred. Player has to ask himself what can push any human being to mass-murder. We provoke this question using new Unreal Engine 4, pushing its physics (or rather PhysX) systems to the limits and trying to make the visuals as good as possible. It's not a simple task, because of the game's non-linear structure and a lot of characters on the screen. But here at Destructive Creations, we are an experienced team and we know how to handle the challenge!

Is it satire, or are they just contrarians? :hitler

I feel like this workplace has a above average chance of getting shot up by an employee after the woman in the lobby didn't smile at him.

This is unrealistic tbh. When was the last time you saw a brolic mass murderer, looking all cool, with his own house? Smoking and drinking like a badass. Shouldn't he be like 19, 114 pounds, taking his dad's guns out of a locked and sealed safety cabinet on the way to high school or college?

At least they kept it canon by making him a white guy with long hair and a trenchcoat, though. :leon

at the start of the game, you play an adult to the protaganist as a child, and you have the option of reaching out and giving him a hug, ending the game immediately. results from beta testing showed less than 1% of game sessions used this option.  :'(

slipknot would be a better choice i think.

This is getting paraded as the response to touchy feely walking simulators and PC inclusiveness. :heh

I can see it starting a discourse about violence when what seperates it thematically from something like Hotline Miami is essentially just the status of the people you're killing, i.e. organized crime goons in white suits vs innocent civilians and cops, although not a very long one.

I think they're just going the easy route with this one by responding to recent criticisms of videogame violence by taking the common critique literally. Trench coat guy is not an anti-hero or just 'kind of' a psychotic mass murderer if you look at it a certain way, like Nathan Drake. He actually is an insane spree killer and what are you going to say about that, huh? Strikes me as missing the point of the violence discussion entirely.

I'm just waiting for them to paint themsevels as champions of free expression.

Ehh, the game is essentially as violent as a lot of games praised incessantly by most sites condemning this, the only difference it tries to be totally KEWL & TRVE and whatever. The neo nazi thing is a little fucked though.

At the end of the day, the same industry that's nostalgic for fatalities and GTA 3 crushing the buildings is shitting on this and trying to find out fucked up political affiliations within the development team? Yeah, no. As fucked up as this dumb ass game maybe we've seen worse and we'll see much worse. I'm not surprised with the hypocrisy but I'm definitely getting very annoyed with it.

C'mon, why pretend like context doesn't matter? Their tongue seems firmly not in cheek...

Anyways, just glad to see youtube has appropriately mocked and emasculated this, that's all I wanted to see. Probably the strongest response this deserves.

I can definitely appreciate that this game is actually being very brutally honest about violence in games, whereas most attempt to justify the violence with a thin veneer of acceptability. I just don't think that making a point is what they're trying to do so much as that they just want to make a game where you play a straight up psychopath who murders innocent people in the most violent ways possible.

Context does matter. Not all things are equal.

But either way I think the main thing is digital store access anyway. I don't think anybody is saying they don't have the right to sell it. I think the main issue would be Steam and other digital storefronts selling the game, especially if the backgrounds of the dev team are correct.

There are of course shades of grey. I always thought God of War being celebrated in a certain way was a bit weird, but then I'm perfectly fine with mortal kombat since I feel like its always just been a straight up one on one fighting game where extreme violence was the cherry on the cake.

My fear isn't crazy people living out their digital fantasies necessarily even though that will be the angle nearly all the coverage takes.

David Jaffe obviously has shitty thoughts himself, yet that's never brought up much in a God Of War thread.

I think this a bit different and would vary greatly on the level of shitty thoughts because context matters. I think most people think Jaffe is a bit of an egotistical ass. There are lots of egotistical asses out there. But if Jaffe had a swastika on his arm, you can guarantee it would be brought up in every God of War thread.

Which is not the say that this Hatred game is a neo-nazi front game. I haven't really followed/investigated that part of the story to confirm or deny that stuff. And either way my guess would be its probably more an attempt to cash in on controversy than a "political agenda" game. Just more making the point that the artist and the art he creates are rarely separate debates. Look at Roman Polanski for example. Great artist. Some people separate the art and the man. Some people find it very difficult to impossible to do so. And that's in the case of someone who has legit created great art.

For devs of a game making a kill innocent people simulator for people to chill-lax with, I can certainly understand the desire to understand the motivations behind making such a thing.

I understand, what I don't is how suddenly shooting civilians and killing innocent people in games is now something everybody unites against. You've done so and been rewarded for it a billion times over.

In most video games I think people want innocent civilians in the world to create a sense of it actually being a real world. I don't think "most" consumers play the game solely to wander around the world and kill innocent civilians though. Or at least I don't.

Just like anything I think there are exceptions to this. How somebody might just goof around in GTA killing people and seeing how long he can survive until getting killed which ostensibly is what this Hatred game is going for.

Now a person might make all sorts of stories in his head about why he is doing this. Who is to really know. But we can probably agree that for some people the justification, that I hate all human beings and want to see them brutally murdered might be a turn off for some people. Taking it one step further what if the devs have inserted an agenda in the game where as the people I'm killing also might be of a different race than me. Once again not saying Hatred is doing this just yet, but you could understand how they might be even more of a turn off for some people.

And some people might not care either way. They would just say its digital data that doesn't represent real people and reject the notion that they could be influenced by the agenda of the game or indirectly supporting the views of the dev team.

I logically see how all these positions can exist. And there is a fair and intelligent conversation to have on it. It's just unlikely that conversation will happen on the internet. And even if the conversation does happen, you can't divorce it from the reality of how people view these things and the inherent reactions, it provokes in people.

I think the discussion and the debate are fine. As long as they aren't stopped from being able to create or express themselves in this way all the other stuff is valid.

It's not even really that violent. I mean, yeah, you shoot and stab helpless people, but about all you get out of it is some blood. It's definitely not as violent as something like the new Mortal Kombat. Was GTA V too hot for GAF? What about that Call of Duty game where you shot people at an airport? Manhunt? People are acting like this is some new low for videogames and it's really not, just some clever PR from the developers.
