Cancelled my Amazon prime membership recently. Hasn't been as bad as I expected. Lots of items have free shipping anyway. Amazon can't guarantee two-day shipping like the subscription gets you, but almost everything I've ordered since canceling has arrived earlier than their estimates. Yesterday I bought an air bed that had no free shipping option. Strangely enough the one day shipping price was a few cents cheaper than standard shipping so I was able to sleep on it last night. Had been roughing it on the floor for the first three nights.

Got to tell a person that no one says "no" to in a company today a resounding "No. That's stupid." The look on her face and her team's face was glorious. The shock. The "OMG. What just happened? Can he do that?" looks were great and the fact that the rest of the room (including her boss) was looking at all of them like "he's right. you're period of not getting called out on your bullshit is over." As a consultant you're paid to be the person to blame. But sometimes you're paid to say what no one dares say. Ah, not putting up with corporate babies

My favorite experience with a consultant was a meeting with another group in the company after they had gone to the VP level to say that we would not provide some information. We did provide it, but we didnt own it and couldn't verify the accuracy. They wanted us to own it and take the shitstorm if it turned out to be crap.

So after that happened we sat down with them and our consultant. They were supposed to confirm this information but all they basically did was hot potato it back to us again.

Consultant: "So what you're telling me is you've wasted our time again?"

Then he lets out a tirade of things I wanted to say along and makes one of the women cry (she was also preggo btw which makes it funnier). As we were walking out of the meeting he tells me "that's what I'm here for, man. You guys are paying me to be the bad guy in these situations"

Me: Awesome!

Had half a cup of coffee leftover, needed something to nosh in place of lunch so I can work, and it turned out the muffin no-one touched was of the cinnamon coffeecake variety. I haven't had one of these in years, but they're my favorite.

I dunno. There are only two types of over 40 programmers in the games industry, those who rose to senior levels at respectable companies and those who are lazy burnouts at go nowhere shops. I really don't want to end up in the latter category, and that's partially why I've picked up non game development skills along the way, so I could make a move to a less awful industry.

Today I went to programmer conference thingy and it was honestly pretty inspiring. Lots of much more experienced guys talking about the kinds of issues and problems they solve and how, and it was all really interesting engineering issues, not bullshit management nonsense.

The problem is that most of the speakers worked at the same 5 or so companies, and those companies are super picky and have super low turnover for good reason. So the way I see it, I either have to find a way to get to the level of what a company like that would be interested in OR I have to eventually move to a different industry.

It was game development that made me want to study CS initially. I got the degree but I'm using it for other stuff. Crunch time horror stories did a good job scaring me off. If my options are struggling as an indie dev or working somewhere more stable with less exciting games then I figure I'm better off out of the industry. I had fun making a couple of small ones though.

As much as I'd love that I have to say New Orleans is probably your destination if you want to see or do something interesting and it's much closer. Buuuuuuuuut, if you decide to visit two places

Both said they can sell it within 3 months for 25% more than when I bought it for less then 2 years ago.

Bought a Seagate external HDD on Amazon that wouldn't initialize out of the box and Amazon did a quick and easy full refund. Also decided to call Motorola since my turbocharger that came with the phone got bent at the point that goes into the phone (I slept on it) and since I had the warranty and the charger is probably a few cents, they are just sending me a replacement with no RMAs or whatever. I got 1.5 turbochargers now.

American customer service with Chinese-made electronics is a beautiful thing.

Not my victory but my boss's daughter has been selected in a group of the top 80 eight and nine year old gymnasts in the country, and has made the national TOPS gymnastic team. She leaves for a week in October for training and further evaluation at the Olympic training (the ranch) in Houston. From there they will further refine down the team with ongoing training opportunities throughout the year.
