had to put my dog down
« on: October 21, 2014, 10:32:41 AM »
over the last week my little duder Eddie started becoming really sick. he stopped eating and drinking and became real weak. I took him to a vet who kept him for a few days, doing blood work and hydrating him and giving him medicine. on Friday I took him home, he had been getting better. my hopes quickly were dashed when he immediately returned to previous behavior. he became extremely weak. lost a lot of weight and could barely stand.

took him back to the vet. doctor told reiterated what he told me before, he thinks his kidneys are failing and there is nothing really to be done beyond daily IV hydration sessions and that would never be a permanent fix. so i had to make the difficult decision and I put him down.

tough. real tough.

RIP Eddie, I love you buddy, I miss you.

I'm sorry for you loss  :'(

I had to put two of my dogs down last year (one due to cancer and the other one due to behavior reasons) and I still get upset about it all the damn time (the one who lost to cancer had been with me since the first grade and I was about to graduate high school whenever he was put down and while the other one was an ass at times, he was the sweetest thing ever whenever he wasn't an ass)

pouring one out whenever I get home

I was still in elementary school at the time. I don't remember exactly what grade. Probably 7 or 8. Back then I lived on a street that had a super long straight stretch followed by a curve and another long stretch until it ended at the local park. After school the bus would drop me off at the far corner of my street and I always had to make the long walk down this street to my house. This walk would take maybe 5 to 10 minutes depending on how quick I was walking. It must have been during the spring or fall because it definitely was not snowing. I remember walking down my street and reaching the curve which would allow me to actually see my house. When I made the curve I noticed a small little animal spinning around in circles on my front porch. It was a little white and tan dog and for whatever reason he decided that MY front porch was the best place to hang on this afternoon. My family had never had a dog for very long periods of time up to this point and I was leery about local strays. My house got closer and closer and eventually this little dog noticed me walking up. I had to be the only one on the entire street. Immediately after noticing me the dog jaunted down the stairs and planted himself in my front driveway. Front legs stiff, tail up, ears perched. I didn't really know if he was aggressive or not so I just approached slowly.

He wasn't aggressive. I walked by the little dog and up my porch. And he followed. I opened the front door and stepped inside and he followed.

And he continued to follow me until today.

He always loved eating cat food. And it's my fault. When I took him in the first time we didn't have any food what-so-ever in my house for dogs. But we did have cats. I figured what the hey? Cat food it is. This little guy absolutely gobbled it all up. And he continues to do so much to my moms dismay. It wasn't until my mom completely moved the the cats away from the dogs that he finally moved to dog food for good.

Fuck, so sorry for your loss.   :(

The same thing happened to my cat a few years ago.  She withered away into a weak little husk of her former self and was finally put down after 19 years.  I was really sad, but looked at as that we gave her a good life and helped her end her suffering at the end.  Now we have a dog and I hope that she also lives a good, long full life.

Condolences, man. I had to put down my basset hound Dr. Fred out of the blue last December and I'm not exaggerating when I say it was the worst day of my life.

I'm so sorry, fistful. That shit sucks. I've had a lot of dogs, but having to put down the dog I had throughout elementary until after I was out of college was the hardest.

My daughter's room at my parents house is my old room, and she plays with all my toys. Yesterday my daughter took a nap over there and insisted on taking MY collie stuffed animal to bed. It looked just like my dog. My daughter pointed at a picture my parents left in my room, one I took for my high school photography class, of my dog. She was gone before my baby was born, but my daughter still knows all about her. The feels, they are real. They are always with us, bro.

Losing a dog is harder than losing a blood relative, as hard as losing a best friend. Sounds like you had a great friend for a long time, Fistful. You did the right thing in helping him not be miserable -- and all dogs get to go to heaven.
