Any app developers?
« on: October 22, 2014, 09:47:13 AM »
I have an idea for an iOS/Android app for my work that I want to create, but I have no idea where to start.

Do any of my Bore bros have any experience making apps?

I’d say teach yourself Unity, but EA’s old CEO Riti-jello is working on selling them. There’re other middleware/authoring suites out there, but losing Unity’s independence and integrity would have me shitting myself if I was an indie developer right now.

I have done a terrible iOS app.  Unless you own a mac, don't start with iOS.

Also do you know how to program?

I have a tiny bit of experience working with app creation middleware (specifically, one that my ex-coworker created), but haven't fuxxed with Xcode even though I have it installed.

Android is much easier to slide into.  All java, Android Studio is wonderful IDE, and you don't have to fuck around with any sort of review process for distributing your app.

if you wanna get into iOS development, you have to become a registered developer with Apple, download Xcode, Interface Builder, and a few other things.  All Objective-C, unless you want to learn a brand new language called Swift, which is just C in principle.  Dealing with Apple is a fucking nightmare when trying to publish apps at particular times, however.

Not to mention the cost of a mac and developer license.  I do love xcode though.

Before you start, if you're not familiar with object-oriented programming, you'll need to get familiar with it.  Most mobile and server-to-web/mobile logic is built with this approach.

Yeah, I have no programming experience.  The closest I could say that I have ever been to programming would be the webpages I made 10 years ago that my 7 year old could put together in 10 minutes now using MS Word.

ya you're going to need to learn how to program first.

I recommend the coursera UofT intro to programming course (I actually TA the course, though not the coursera stuff).  Its in python but you can learn java after.

https://www.coursera.org/course/programming1

you don't actually need to do the 'class' just watch the videos and do the assignments and post here if you need help.

If you're going down the path of iOS development, I recommend the Stanford programming classes they offer on iTunes U.  Most of them are related to mobile development for iPhones.

I make marketing applications for a living.

What kind of app do you want to make?
Do you ever plan on releasing it on Android?
Does it have S/P/A?
Does it make use of any special features of the phone (camera, nfc, gestures)?

If you know web technologies you could use something like Phonegap. I'm not a fan of these kinds of things though as they end up being more headache than they're worth.

I have an iPhone, but I also have an android tablet.  For me, it wouldn't really matter which platform I made it on first.  My goal is to make it accessible for everyone I work with as well though, so both platforms would be a must as everyone I work with uses different devices.

Out of curiousity, if I were to pay someone to do this instead of taking the time to do it myself, how much money would I be looking at spending?

I had some free time the other day to draw out what I would like the basic layout to look at.  There are a couple of other things I want to add to it though.  Basically,  I want an app that I can use to add specific types of information into a database that can then either be stored for later use and review or exported into either cloud storage or emailed out as a spreadsheet.  This is all for the purpose of making "calls" as an insurance agent, but could easily be used for any profession where the sales agents are out making contacts with clients (real estate also comes into mind).

I have the spreadsheet already, as it's one that has been designed for my associates and myself a long time ago.  The problem I find is that trying to enter data into this spreadsheet through a third party app like (iOS) Pages or (Android) Google Docs is that they are too clunky and time consuming to use properly where the spreadsheets are too large to properly view on a phone or tablet sized screen.

I have no idea what you mean by S/P/A.  It wouldn't require any special features like gestures or use of the camera as far as I can think of.

Doesn't sound relevant to your app.

You could probably do it as a mobile focused website if you don't want to do it natively.

Instead of making an app just make a responsive site that does what you want. It'll be easier to fix if it breaks, more secure, and be more accessible by design. Thus not limiting it to just a mobile application use.

Funny thing is, I got really bored a couple of nights ago and just started searching the iOS app store furiously for anything that might be similar to what I was looking for.  After looking at different apps for about 2 hours, I finally found something to suit my needs.
