Do you think MS will make Minecraft not suck?
« on: October 27, 2014, 09:27:53 PM »
After giving this a try on PS4 for several hours I can honestly say I think it's a pretty shitty game.

As a Lego game, it sucks. Block placement is too finicky. To get certain blocks like Jack-O-Lanterns to say, face away from you on the edge of a building, you have to build ladders and such. No control option to just spin the block around without all that hassle? That's some basic shit to be missing in a multimillion dollar game.

As a game-game, it sucks. Needing better tools to mine rarer ore is fine, but tool wear and breakage is a grindy chore. All the good shit is way down in the ground, and if you die you lose it and have to start all over again. I could understand a penalty system where you might lose half of it, but as it stands all too often it feels like you waste a lot of time for little gain. Monsters are too overpowered even on easy settings, and combat is lacking good hit indicators and movement. Losing all your shit when you die is bullshit of the highest order. I was way, way, way down in the ground and like a dozen fucking skeleton archers kept pouring out of this hole and that was it. I'll never be able to find that stuff again.  At least Terraria gives you the option of keeping your on-character inventory when you die (because it's the superior game).

I just find it very lacking in comparison to knockoffs/variations of it like Terraria, which came way later. There's some really basic stuff missing, and I don't get why it remains so popular when there are better games out there in the same genre.  I wish I'd never bought it. I'd have been better off taking that $20 bill and wiping my ass with it.

tl;dr; :umad

I think I get it.

Like a lot of things I think its fun for a good amount of time but not for ever. I literally could have seen myself playing it for a year or so if I had gotten in earlier. But I don't think I could have played it for much longer than that. At that point I would have had my fill.

The way people play it, its a social game. It's something to do while you chat with your friends like World of Warcraft or many other super popular things. It stops being solely about the game and is equally about just killing time with your friends. I know people who've played it for years for different reasons. Some because they are less into games now and Minecraft scratches that itch without having to learn new stuff. For other people its just a way to skype with their friends. And then of course you have the billions of kids who are into it for kids reasons.

I think making it a better game is almost moot at this point. They can keep adding stuff around the fringes but why bother substantially changing stuff when the mod scene already takes care of most of that stuff.

They might try the up the ante with Minecraft 2 but I have a feeling that's years away.

So in essence, no. They will not make it not suck. They'll just try to keep it rolling as it is.

The Minecraft grind is real. This is why modded Minecraft is also as popular as it is. Paradoxically, many popular mods add their own grind. But you bought a crippled version, so this is moot anyway.

In the game's defense, it's possible to control your environment 100%. Including dangerous cave expeditions. This can get extreme, but in most cases it's enough to keep the light levels high, since monsters only spawn in darkness. So spam those torches or just block off passages every now and then. A two block high wall will defend against anything but spiders.

The skeletons are bullshit in the current iteration of the game. They used to be a lot less threatening, but an update over-compensated, so now it's all but guaranteed that you take damage if you face even a single skeleton. Especially if they surprise you, which they will. Unless it's a zombie, surprise is how all the monsters get you, regardless of how familiar with the game you are.

Also, your shit is/was still there. Unless the console versions are gimped in this way, your stuff stays where it is for 5 minutes. If you can make it back there, you get to keep it. Unless it falls into lava, in which case it's gone forever.

I was too far away to make it back in five minutes. And I got killed again :(

I dunno, I guess I was just expecting something different out of it. In Terraria, within a few hours I was building crazy weapons like swords that bring down shooting stars when you swing them, and wearing some pretty boss armor. I was just surprised to find Minecraft so basic and empty-feeling, considering it's the basis for all such knockoff games.

Yeah, it's pretty bare-bones, even after all these updates. Most stuff is cosmetic or fluff. 1.8 added new challenges and world-gen (underwater temples), but it's still the same core game, with the same, largely unchanged mechanics.

There's ways to get over-powered quickly, but few incentives besides killing the ender dragon and having really good tools that tear through blocks so fast you accidentally mine more you intend to. But that involves dealing with enchantments and those are shit.

It's a (collaborative) building game with somewhat interesting world-gen, first and foremost. You need to be in a very special place in your life to play it by yourself, entirely focused on the game. I can't play it without a stream open or some podcasts queued up and I'm good for another couple years after my recent foray into modded Minecraft.

Terraria is definitely a better "game" game. Although the people who are "serious" about Minecraft have basically modded the shit out of the game so its a pretty different experience than vanilla Minecraft console at this best.

I think the problem is you played Terraria first. So, it was impossible to evaluate the game without constantly comparing it.

The game really shines when you have friends/family playing with you and trying out all the mods and texture packs. It's like the modern day Half-Life (multiplayer) in some regards.

As an aside, if you love Terarria and want something even more like a 'traditional game', I would recommend highly  'King Arthur's Gold'. It's on Steam.

I'm sure MS has plans to make what will be the most popular game ever more broadly appealing than it already is.

Well, if you want to play Minecraft but a version that's an actual game, The Forest is apparently what you're looking for.

I don't know the answer, but my step son would. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of Minecraft and Minecraft mods. He hardly plays it, mind you, but the YouTube video addiction is strong
