The 80's were frickin weird and a bit bipolar with that. You had strong anti-gay sentiments all through pop culture and in real life interactions. It was all blatant and nothing was wrong about it. But you also had these huge music stars that would bend gender, or tease at being gay. You had movies and television specials that would play around with the ideas and preach acceptance. That was also all through the culture and was quite popular with the straight masses.
