Fantasy Life (Brownie Brown/Level-5, 3DS)
« on: October 28, 2014, 05:37:37 PM »
So this game came out. I thought it was one of those Fantasy Harvest Moon things so I was like "ignore", then I saw it was actually an RPG made by Brownie Brown and Level-5 so I was like "ignore" but then I bought it anyway tho cuz #yolo and also #bolo.

It's basically Babby's First RPG with some Animal Crossing thrown in (HIMU ALERT: The game's character creation tool lets you pick your skin color, so you don't have to hack to be black.), but it seems like a pretty great portable game because there's thousands of little quests and things you can do that only take a few minutes, so you can sink a ton of time into it but you can play in quick chucks and still accomplish something.

- You have 12 "Lives" to choose from, which is just in the in-game way of saying jobs. There are combat jobs (Paladin, Wizard, etc), harvesting jobs (Woodcutter, Miner, Fisherman), and artisan jobs (Blacksmith, Chef, Carpenter).

- Each Job has it's own specific quests that you undertake for Stars. Stars level up your job rank. Most of the Job Quests are related to your current Job, like "Kill 10 Bandits" if you're a Paladin, or "Cut Down 10 Trees" if you're a woodcutter.

- There are also regular quests you can accept from townsfolk that give you Dosh (money) and items. You can accept up to 30 quests at a time, early quests can be finished by any characters, but as you advance you'll get quests that require a specific job to complete. Like a person might ask you for 3 Superior Health Potions, so you'll have to switch to an Alchemist to brew the potions.

- Then there's Butterfly Quests, the Butterfly being your Navi "Hey! Listen!" sidekick (actually he's a bit snarky) who gives you the quests that advance the plot, like "Go Talk to the King" or "Check Out that New Mine that Opened Up". His quests also give you "Bliss", which is allow you to choose bonuses to unlock. So far I've "Blissed" twice and unlocked Increased Pouch Size (50 -> 100) and the ability to own a pet. The ability to own a horse has also been promised to me once I get enough bliss.

- If you kill certain higher-level monsters, they turn into a Bounty Box, and you can drag it's ass back to town for cash. You can't fast travel with a bounty box, you literally do have to drag it back to town, and enemies can destroy it, but if you want to do it, it's another way to make Dosh.

- Combat is pretty uninspired, Press A to attack, Hold A to do a charge attack, Press X to Shield/Special Move. You auto-lock unto targets when you get close them, you can press Y to change targets. Press B to sheath your weapon, and run when you're weapon is sheathed. That's combat. Special Moves, Shielding, Charge Attacks and running all use SP, SP slowly regenerates. You have a pouch that you can open that holds 8 items in it that you can use during combat (like potions), but opening the pouch doesn't pause combat.

I've put about 4 hours into it and I'm still in the first area. It seems like a game you could put a lot of time into if you wanted to. There's also an expansion pack on the eshop for $9 that adds a bunch of post game content.

I remember when this had 2D graphics in line with mother3 and brownie brown's layton thing, not really feeling what it looks like now.

Damn, Molotov reminded me that I didn't finish the Japanese version yet, lol.  I think I dropped it for Gunvolt or something and never went back.

Those impressions are pretty spot-on, btw.  Most of the meat in the game isn't the main quest (which is really really short and it's easy to finish the game fairly quickly without getting into a lot of the optional stuff), so it's kinda Rune Factory or those kinds of games where the bulk of it lies in farming, doing small quests for people, crafting, buying/selling, etc.  And the combat is pretty easy to get through since it's more geared for a wider audience so I wouldn't look for a ton of depth here.

I preferred the Mother 3 look myself (and still do), but I think it works contextually here.

Did the English version end up having the patch for the 3 save files, etc. built in, then?  I had to download the patch from the eShop and make sure my file from before I patched the game converted over.

Yeah, there's three save spots in the US version and there's no patch in the eshop.

It's been in development for a while, it was originally going to be a 2D game on the DS, but that version was scrapped.

Man, if it wasn't a birthday present, I would've waited for the US version since the patch was pretty big.  Oh well.  Western owners got lucky.

so wait, this was originally a JPN DS game, and got a worldwide release as a 3DS port/remake?
and its a Level 5/Brownie Brown collaboration (like London Life from Professor Layton 4)?

The NDS game was canceled and we got this instead. It's indeed a collaboration with 1-UP Studio (formerly Brownie Brown).

it really is. i dont even care for the story stuff at the moment. im just trying to get as much material as i can before i have to

also, odin and the pirate princess are life savers. they roll in and just ruin monsters, and all i have to do is reap the benefits
