Buying a house dillemas

Buying a house or appartment is such a hassle, not cool.

The most important factors seem (budget being a constant)

-size (the further from the good location the bigger)
-location (in relation to work/centre, and neighbourhood)

Do you go out to the boring subs outside of the city and commute but have a garden, stay in the city in a cool neighbourhood but in a closet sized appartment or move to a so so neighbourhood just outside of the center but in a decent sized and modern appartment?

So far we seem to be going for option 3. Stay within 10km of our jobs, not so attractive neighbourhood but a great modern place.

Shit is making me crazy, especially since I want to get this sorted before the baby is here in a few months.

I bought a townhouse in the same booming suburb that my office is located in.

Yes, the community is fairly cookie-cutter suburb because of its rapid growth, but I have a 10 minute drive to work, and my townhouse has gone up probably 80k in value in under 4 years.

I bought a *little* bigger and pricier than I had planned when I started looking, but I am glad I did, I much prefer my more open space than the cramped smaller options, and it's better for hosting the odd party.

I actually got the first house I put an offer on.

I totally hadn't prepared myself for winning the bid, I had chalked it up to a learning experience.

Then my agent called and said "you got it!"  And I was like "huh?  What?  Oh shit this is really happening"

Guess when you get older being smack in the middle of city life is not as important, also I think NOrth American cities are a bit different to ours, as far as locations go.

We need a large place, preferably with a garden, and with a realistic budget that allows us to still have money for everyday expenses our options are quite limited. The houses in my neighborhood are above a million dollars so we need to look for something further away from the city center.

I hate home buying with such a passion!

I've been renting for the past 8 years and apparently I was supposed to own a condo all this time since renting doesn't do shit for your credit. Now that we're both looking to seriously move to our own place it is a hassle that is almost too big to deal with. So now we are left with the very real threat of having to buy a condo or something we don't like just so we live in it for a few years and then sell it.

I would very much love it if California wasn't such a shit place when it comes to home buying, but it is what it is. It doesn't help that the area I live in is crazy when it comes to property values. People are buying homes for 1mil+ and then tearing them down to build another home on the land.

I put in a bid for my house, and got it accepted... then the day I sent the inspector over I was informed that there was a higher bid placed by someone else, but since those people got an FHA loan they sold it to me instead since they didn't want to deal with the slow-ass gubmit

The best story about my house is that the former owner was the president of a small payroll company, and embezzled over 3 million from his clients... he ended up getting arrested and his wife had to sell the house to pay for some of the damages. Put in an offer on a small 2 bedroom apartment in a very cool new area. Let's see. The place is not ideal and expensive, but great quality and location.
