Tell me why Mordor is good stuff
« on: November 11, 2014, 09:23:15 PM »
I tried a little of Shadows of Mordor a few weeks ago and everything seems to play great, nice fluid batman combat, great character models, cool rain effect, good stealth stabbing people.  But after like an hour I was kind of over it because it was a sandbox city game...without a city!  From what I could see Mordor was just a big empty brown rocky field with some castle ruins spread around to climb on and stab people from.

Am I missing something?  It just seems really empty and one of the main reasons I like sandbox games are exploring the cities/forest/jungles of the world and doing missions within them.  Morder just seemed like a bunch of gameplay plopped onto a brown desert.  Does the game have more varied locations as you get further into it?  I know LotR as a whole has a big Ice & Fire style world, but this game takes place in Mordor which seems like just ugly dirt, which seems like a real boring place to set a game.

I kind of want to play this next if AC5 ends up sucking, but need someone to tell me why everyone was raving about it.

It isn't great. Combat is the best part but you have to do all this other shit to get to it. Few hours I put in too there didn't seem to be any combat challenge rooms like in the Batman games. Garbage.

The nemesis system is just a round about way to taunt and punish you for dying too. That's really it.

Keep playing until you see a random grunt promoted and grow much stronger just because he landed a lucky killing blow on you.

That seems to be the main draw.

I had a fun 3 hours with it. Then it gets repetitive and dull.

I'm probably going to pick it up in a black Friday or Steam sale.  Heard it was a better AC than the recent AC games and worth checking out if you like the Batman Arkham games.

Well since AC:U ended up sucking...

Give it some more time.  I went into it with doubts and had some issues at first too.  The bow was way to sensitive.  Luckily there is an option for that.  After changing that, the bow became a great go to.  The walk to run animation felt a little jarring... I ended up getting used to that though.

The environment thing should not be an issue.  You're in Mordor.  There aren't supposed to be "cities" as we know them in other open world games.
There are however strongholds which can easily become far more challenging than the batman challenge rooms toku wants if they end up setting off the beacon.   Especially when captains get involved.
You open up fast travel very quickly and you get to ride Caragors pretty early which also speeds up travel.  And the strongholds get much larger on the second map.

The game does start a little slow b/c your combat options are limited, but as you progress and they open up, combat becomes super satisfying.
The game really started picking up for me when I went to take on the first Warchief.  Each battle with them ends up being something different.  Especially if they have body guards.

By the time you get to the second map, the game is fan-fugging-tastic.

I put over 50 hours into it, got the platinum and now I'm itching for the DLC.  Really fun and satisfying.

Yeah I'm on another forum with Bork and he pointed me here b/c I've been pretty open about how much I loved Mordor.

Edit...
Also... Thanks! :)

Heart felt stuff.

It's great at pacing out the 'things you can do' bits and you can just from the outset battle tons of orcs and die lots. After maybe 3/5 hrs that's when it really kicks in.

Should I take that as a compliment? ???

Agreed.  Battles begin to get a lot more interesting pretty quickly once you unlock abilities.
The "Execution" ability should be the first one you get.  Period. :)
