Time will reveal squarepusher and flylo to be overrated, just like it did venetian snares
Time definitely won't treat FlyLo well. Cosmogramma --> UTQC --> You're Dead! is a super self-indulgent run of music that:
1. Doesn't fit within the dominate themes of his contemporaries
2. Doesn't match the talent and advancements of (some of) his contemporaries, both locally and globally
3. Is super, super, super smart-dumb pretentious in theory and execution
4. Probably sucks if you aren't into playfully inexplicable jazz motifs
5. Saw a bunch of his "disciples" (for lack of better term) pass him as a musician in many ways
6. Despite the personal growth he's shown, was/is super stagnant in terms of his growth as a musician
I say this as a huge fan of the guy and those albums individually. I love self-indulgent music, I love the frame of mind he comes with, I love his live work. I'm definitely part of the super, super, super smart-dumb pretentious music theory and execution club. It's just not material that will hold up well to critical thought over time. Dude is in for a complete Arcade Fire treatment. Cosmogramma might escape judgment, but in critical circles UTQC is going to be looked back on in the same light as Neon Bible (incredibly overwrought, not worth returning to) and You're Dead! is probably headed for Reflektor treatment ("cool! ...wait, why?"). Tho I doubt people will go back and question Los Angeles, 1983, and his live material the way dudes (rightfully) reassessed Funeral and The Suburbs. But the more and more mainstream attention he gets, the closer and closer that backlash wave gets. You can feel people getting ready to turn on him because their lame cousin from the suburbs is bumping Dead Man's Tetris and went to see FlyLo at (insert local festival here).
At the same time dude could really reinvigorate himself and kick off the second half of a successful, innovative career with this Captain Murphy record if he fully commits himself to it.
I guess one of my controversial opinions is that Arcade Fire, in retrospect, are fucking
ultra corny faux intellectual melodramatic shlock that appeals to people who want their cradle to grave middle management lifestyle to feel important. RE: every thought Win Butler has ever had:
who fucking cares
