IPAs aren't that impressive

What's the big deal? I'd rather drink a Blue Moon with a slice of orange. There are so many better alcohol options to IPAs. What in the world is the big deal?  :mindblown

IPAs are the call of duty of beers

ultimately an enjoyable experience but marred by terrible versions and with a terribly childish following

Also, pro-tip: if you're gonna drink an IPA, drink it in a glass and give it like a minute to breathe. Tastes less like a hippie that way. Drinking them in a bottle makes em more skunky.

This is in no way an endorsement of drinking IPAs, tho. Just saying.

a beer with a lot of hops in it. overall pretty good stuff if you enjoy that sort of taste but has been co-opted by hipster feggits so everyone pretends they're now too cool to drink it.

I bought a pretty meh IPA a few days ago. Founders' All Day IPA, Session Ale. There's a citrus/orange-y hint mixed in with the alcohol, and it's rather skunky to me.

Enjoying beer is about finding what you like and drinking it. There's a ton of stuff out there. If you aren't into IPAs.... :yeshrug

That being said, you might enjoy more balanced IPAs that hit citrus and floral notes (Sculpin, Big Eye, Centennial, etc). The super super aggressive more hops means better beer stuff (West Coast IPAs), particularly some stuff that comes out of Stone, isn't representative of the entire class. Just kind of what's faddy at the moment. tbh there's a line where something is TOO dank (Big Sky), but I love super hoppy stuff.

I can't talk shit about anyone's taste in booze. Right now I'm drinking out of a bottle of Chi-Chi's Long Island Iced Tea Mix that passed down from two different people who didn't like it. I have a buzz, and that's all that matters. It's all about alcohol therapy, kids.

Hey Pickles, I remember a couple months ago in GAF-Hop you were thinking about getting more into liquor. How's that going?

I tried for a while and kind of wrote it off for the time being. Went to a couple mixology type places and didn't really enjoy the vibe, which didn't help. Made it out to Ballast Point's tasting room and enjoyed their stuff, but never really kept up with trying others, learning to differentiate styles, etc. I wish there were more liquor events ala beer so I could jump in, kill a weekend trying stuff and getting fucked up, and start learning that way. For now I just pour out some Makers every once and a while during drinking sessions

I like to drink a good beer for my first beer when I'm out drinking, but pretty much this. A friend last night put it thusly: "I don't keep up with beer shit... give me cheap and plentiful, but not PBR and I'm happy. Will it get me twisted? Good, I'll have a pitcher of it."

because they're about as "Belgian White" as you are.

IPAs are gud. So are stouts, porters, wits, cherry lambics, quads, whatever.

You Americans are just way too pampered when it comes to good beer by now and forget about what it was like just a few decades ago, or what it's still like in other parts of the world. Check your privilege.

there are a lot of us Dominicans around where i live (though declining by the day ) so it's pretty easy to find presidente. That is the one thing I will miss when I eventually move away myself.

I usually just buy a bunch of random shit when I go out but IPA's are just like most beer types.  Some can be really good and some can be really bad.  :yeshrug

I need to start brewing my own again.  I brewed a couple of batches and then life stuff got in the way and I never went back.

Homebrewer? What kind of stuff did you make? All-grain or extract?

Just did an Amarillo session pale a few weeks ago with some buddies, gonna bottle it pretty soon.

I made 3 batches with a kit I purchased at a local brew store.  I used extract kits that they had to make an ale and two IPA batches.  I don't remember exactly which kits they were because it was about 2 years back but it was a lot of fun.  My wife and I inherited roommates for almost a year so I had to put away everything to make space and then work picked up but I need to get back into it.  Lennedsay's husband is the one who originally got me into it.

I want to go for a better setup though so I can go all grain and not really on the small batches and the extract kits.  Any recommendations on better beginner setups?  I'm not afraid to piece together or make some of my own equipment to yield better results so I'm not specifically looking for manufactured kits.  I think this will be my winter project!

Also, Blue Moon is popular because it's the best mass-produced, available anywhere beer. Kicks the living shit out of Bud, Miller, Coors, etc. It's the In 'N' Out Burger of beers.

Wow. Los Angeles must suck ass if that's the best available anywhere beer.

In Seattle, Mannys Pale Ale and Mack and Jack African Amber are available pretty much everywhere. Not the best local offerings, but they're solid and reliable local mainstays.

I mean a beer that you can just pick up at a 7-11 or something.

7-11 beer is Deschutes, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, Red Hook and Pyramid. And maybe Elysian or 10 Barrel depending on the 7-11/gas station.

Lots of gas stations in WA and OR also do growler fills. The reason CA doesn't do that is due to your laws regarding growler fills.

Lagunitas IPA and Stone IPA are the best semi-ubiquitous beers in California. Even small places will carry one of the two. Not the best, but always present and never disappointing. In LA specifically a lot of Golden Road stuff is getting high distribution but I'm not a big fan. El Segundo Brewing is also on the come up in terms of availability. San Diego...doesn't count. Beer anomaly. Every place in San Diego has 20+ taps of the best shit in the country in addition to their own house beers. It's unreal how fast you become a breakfast/lunch/dinner all day drinker in that city.

But the idea that Blue Moon and Sierra Nevada aren't far and away the best mass-market beers on the planet is kind of...weird? Like it's so obviously true idk why anyone would dispute it. You ever try ordering beer in Alabama? Can't even get a Bud Lite Lime outside of the southwest.
