What have I been missing on Android phones?
« on: December 03, 2014, 08:48:06 PM »
So help me out, brosephs.  I just bought a Nexus 6 and I'm looking for some guidance on the cool features that I may not know about so easily.

I've seen some people playing PS1, N64, SNES, etc emulation.  How do I do this?

Any must have apps?  Or games?

all those emulators are easy to get.  just search for "ps1 emulator" in google play

as for the games, you'll just need to plop them on the phone or DL them directly from a ROM site

gracias.  checking that out now.

On my windows phone I have Xbox Music.  I know they have an app for android and I'll continue to use it for now but how is the Google music service?  Any upsides or downsides that stand out?  I'm generally pretty happy with my Xbox Music.  Great selection and I use it on my xbox consoles too.

Non-gaming, but I'd recommend rooting and installing AdAway.

What other benefits come with rooting?

I assume AdAway is an adblocker?

Rooting is beneficial if you're a tweaking/flashing special fellow. It came in handy back when I was in the Samsung ghetto. Some say it's not necessary with a Nexus. When I had a N4 (now a OnePlus) the only thing I used that needed root was AdAway.

It uses the host file, so it will also block app ads.

just was typing how unnecessary it was to root a nexus....then actually read your post.  hah!

Google Play music is fantastic, honestly preferable to Spotify, in my eyes.  Rdio is better than both, but Google Play is great if you have a subscription.  If you use Xbox music on your xbox, though, it might be worth sticking with it for the benefit of consistency.

Thanks, guys!  Yeah I probably won't root my phone though.  Ads don't really bother me (WP was ad ridden in most apps) and I'm not much of a tinkerer with electronics anymore.  I jailbroke my ipad and did nothing with it.

Thanks!  I spent a good portion of last night listing up my old games that I'd like to play on the run

Indeed I've been getting my Firepro, Fire Emblem, and FFVI advance on.

Myboy is a great GBA emulator available for free off the playstore.

And make sure you get some zip software too.

download all those roms, then watch them go to waste as you quickly lose all desire to play with a touchscreen.

RPGs are the only phone emu games I can play.  it's all about that SNES, PS1, and PSP emulation!

ah crap.  that's basically all i've installed so far, Star Ocean 2 and Final Fantasy VIII.  Action games for quick entertainment don't work?  Twisted Metal 2 on the go would have been the shiznit but I can see how it wouldn't work with the button layout.

You should give it a try and see...I guess it would be on a game-by-game basis, but I can't pull it off.  especially for shoulder button-using games.

You can pair up a controller over bluetooth with a phone.

This is AWESOME!  I travel a lot for work so this would make plane rides and lonely hotels incredible

Yeah I just tried twisted metal 2 and trying to accelerate while firing and turning all at the same time is crap.  Gonna need a controller

mupes, if you wanna rom site with little to no ad interference for older NES/SNES/Genesis games, check out Vimm's Lair.  Still my favorite.

This has always been good to me. It can pull tags from Amazon and other databases.

I believe that is actually an issue with chrome and/or the forum itself.  I've noticed that on my iPhone, too.

The mailbox app looks miles better than the standard!  I'll play around more with it when I get home.

I found a workaround for blocking numbers in 5.0.  I don't know if there's any easier way to do it all the guides I found online are for older versions and the options they show don't exist.  So I had to add a Contact that I named Blocked and then set the option to send them straight to voicemail.  Kind of dumb that they just don't have a blocked or restricted list but whatever.
