Your dream job
« on: December 16, 2014, 08:08:34 AM »
Assuming you don't have your dream job now, what would you like to do most?

I have a pretty sweet job now, but it's def not something I thought of before I ended up here.

In the never gonna happen category I guess the little boy inside me will always dream of being a pro football player. I think I could have had a shot at some kind of career if I didn't quit playing in a club when I was 12 or something. Not saying I would have been playing in a big team, but somewhere 3rd league making some cash to live on.

In the more likely future plan I will own some kind of food place. Working with my hands, making nice food, yeah I'd like that.

Getting paid to do nothing.  Which I suppose is a job a lot of people already have.

Unsure how any man would be okay with sitting home doing nothing for a living. Sounds horrible.

Problem with most dream jobs are that they aren't so 'dreamy' the first 5-10 years. Usually there's a lot of shit work or uncertainty. I would love to be a successful stand-up comedian or a broadcaster, or even a college professor at an elite college, but the front end of those careers can be horrible.

In order to get to the top of the mountain, you have to climb. Nobody is going to say "ZOMG here's a million dollars bro" and that goes for sports (workouts, travel, no time for family), corporation (travel, hours at work, climbing the ladder), or small business (getting the money, putting in more time than a corporate job, first years are tough, etc).

Those are the only three I can speak on.

Something where people look forward to my creative output. Not sure what form that's going to take but I'm exploring everything right now.

With that said, I'm very happy doing what I am at the moment.

I was born poor. My dad and mom did whatever it took to make sure we had nice clothes and food at the expense of their own health. I promised my dad I would be more and that my kids would never have to see me mentally and physically beat down from back to back 14 hours shifts.

My family taught me how to be a good man. I taught myself how to make sure my kids would not have to worry about life in the manner I did.

When I came home from our first hitting practice in Oakland...and found out just how tough NFL guys are...my son cried because I looked like I had been in a fight. I almost quit right then and there.

My drive comes from exactly that.

Edit: Now I watch my son play football. Which he will in college. And I couldn't be more proud of his work ethic and character. That's on you pops, thank you.

I don't share that deeply online (or offline orz), but I'll say this: I never had any "drive" whatsoever. I help other people do their thing, however insignificantly the contribution may be.
All I've ever wanted otherwise was to avoid unnecessary stress, because that wears me down really quickly.

Well, I quite like where I'm heading atm (IT Consultant - done a few years of dev, now i contract around doing random shit, my biz cards just say 'consultant' lol, but i am currently developing regression test suites. not actually as bad as it sounds!), one day i want to be able to work in half yearly intervals, taking 6 months to travel, spend time with family etc. I have a fair amount of hobbies and love to socialise so would suit me.

Since i was a kid i wanted to play sports at a pro level or make it as a musician. I guess the latter is still fairly feasible considering i can still play sax p well, but i haven't played in a band consistently for 2 years now and haven't practiced in months. All my productive time is now spent on computers.

Trophy husband sounds terrible, not just coz all that i wanna be the breadwinner shit, but the loveless relationship it implies. Yeeeuch. Nothing exciting about boring sex and co-dependency.

Motherfucker, the thread is not "let's talk about reality for a sec." Dream. Job. In my dream, I get to not have to work to live. That's what growing up poor taught me. There is a great fucking life out there that most won't get the experience because they're too overworked and underpaid and will remain that way until they die an early death. My dream job is to not have to work. How awesome would life be if you could wake up every morning and do what you want, rather than what some boss, your clients or your mortgage dictates you do?

Stay at home husband checklist (you can do this in your head)

Are you

Good Looking, and by good looking I mean an 8 or 9? (8 pts)

Able to speak with women in a manner that keeps them interested for more than 2 minutes? (8 pts)

Do you play video games for hours at a time? If Yes it's (-8 pts)

Do you dress like a man or are tshirts and tight jeans more your thing?  (5 pts)

Are you able to raise a child? (8 pts)

Are you handy around the house? (6 pts)

Are you an attention whore who will text/call your wife 5+ times a day? (-8pts)

If you aren't at 24 points or more, find another path.

YMMV

Being a scrub on an NBA team would be cool but my dream job would be some type of music A&R role on a decent label interested in reviving artist relationships. I want to be that guy in the board room trying to get a dope artist a good deal, in the studio critiquing shit, etc.

better yet, A&R in the 90s

Ain't that the truth. I met a few when I was playing ball. Endless "me me me" and then "I don't feel like working today."

Somebody told me that Lenny Kravitz was supposed to do a show for a local charity once. The show was supposed to start at 7pm as there were a lot of children and elderly there. Apparently they couldn't find him until 8 and he was completely fucked up. I guess he just showed up, mumbled through 3 songs, then said "fuck this shit" and walked off stage.

i'd have beat him
