Podcast recommendations and discussions thread

Here are a few of my favorite podcasts that i can recommend:

Serial

http://serialpodcast.org

Quote
Describing the first season of Serial accurately and with justice would be a tumultuous undertaking in itself, but in short, the host and executive producer, Sarah Koenig, investigates the strange story surrounding the murder of a Baltimore high school student Hae Min Lee on January 13, 1999. Currently, Adnan Syed, Lee's ex-boyfriend is serving time for the murder, but he insists that he had nothing to do with her death.

- Mashable

It is the no.1 most downloaded podcast ever and the story is still developing. It has a subreddit with over 40,000 subscribers, spoofs and parodies by SNL and FunnyorDie. I listened to the whole thing in 2 days and i can't wait for the next season to start.

Dan Carlin - Hardcore history & Common Sense.

http://www.dancarlin.com/product-category/hardcore-history

Quote
Whether he’s discussing history or current events, veteran journalist Dan Carlin brings his own unconventional approach to the subject matter. His Generation X, non-partisan, “neo-prudentist” outlook provides a fresh look at the headlines in the newspapers and the stories in the history books.

His two podcasts, “Hardcore History” and “Common Sense” are two of the leading independent podcasts in their respective genres. Both productions feature Carlin’s unique, contradictory broadcast style. Passionate without being aggressive, loud but smart, and the trademark fast, staccato vocal delivery that has been compared to William Shatner after too many espressos.

I highly recommend the series he made about the mongols.

I have a few more that I can post about later.
What do you listen to?

In-depth discussion and analysis of film and film history with a little politics on the side. Hosted by actor and activist Tim Heidecker, who is usually joined by a guest.

I haven't been keeping up with many casts lately actually but if they don't have a soundcloud I just use the default iOS app. Pretty much strictly mobile/streaming with podcasts.

I use pocket casts, these are my subscriptions:

- WTF with Marc Maron
- 99% Invisible
- U Talkin' U2 To Me?
- Serial
- The Bugle
- Radiolab
- Doug Loves Movies
- Never Not Funny
- With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus
- Comedy Bang! Bang!
- Professor Blastoff
- The Pod F. Tompkast
- The Andy Daly Podcast Pilot Project
- Harmontown
- The X-Files Files
- Call Chelsea Peretti
- Improv4Humans
- Stop Podcasting Yourself

Out of those, you would probably like:
- 99% Invisible - public radio style 15 minute shows about design (architecture / flags / world longest running lightbulb)
- Radiolab - more like the above, usually longer runtime, broader topic.

After that I would recommend:
- WTF with Marc Maron - interviews mostly in the world of comedy, more music artists lately.
- The Bugle - news satire by John Oliver and Andy Zaltzman

The other podcasts are mostly things that make me laugh out loud when I'm on the train.

I listen to a lot of podcasts because I don't always want to listen to music on my commutes.

Here are the major ones I love

Movies:
Faculty of Horror - two sociologists discuss horror films.  Really smart takes on stuff.  One of my favorites.

Black on Black Cinema- four black men discuss black movies. It's like every other movie podcast wherein four dudes talk about movies, but they exclusively cover black cinema so it provides an interesting perspective.  they cover the high brow and the low brow as well.  The two most recent films discussed are Bad Boys and Bad Boys 2

You Must Remember This - very good podcast about the history of Hollywood.

The Flophouse - writers of the daily show discuss bad movies.

Fighting in the War Room- up to 5 film critics discussing movies.  my tastes often align with the people in discussion (we both loved Godzilla, for example) but sometimes I wildly disagree (they liked The Interview).  Their Top 10s are half Film Comment half Entertainment Weekly.  A bit more highbrow pop, I would say?

Comics
War Rocket Ajax- a bit rah rah but it's entertaining enough.  My views line up with theirs more often than not

Wait, What?- not as rah rah, a bit more critical but these are older hosts so they're not as enamoured with 90s comics as the younger hosts above, so it's more in line with my own thinking

Music-
Secret Skin - Open Mike Eagle's podcast w/ interviews of his friends.

Shots Fired Podcast- Jeff Weiss of Passion of the Weiss and Nocando of Hellfyre Club discuss hip hop. Very heavy West Coast bias, but that's fine as it exposes me to a lot of music I wouldn't find on my own.

Misc:
Hardcore History

Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff - nominally a role playing game podcast but it will be about food, history, esoteric occultism, film and design theory as often as it is about RPGs.

The Bugle- News Satire.  The Best, really.

The HP Lovecraft Literary Podcast- readings and examinations of HP Lovecraft's stories. They've covered all of his stories so for the past year or so they've been delving into the stories of writers he admires.  I love old horror so this is near perfect for me.

A Podcast to the Curious - a direct imitation of the above but dealing with MR James.  It updates infrequently but it's always a good listen as they will go deep into stories.

I only listened to the Louis CK episode(s) and it was great. If anything, check out that episode and listen to two guys reminisce and just be people. Ends on a really nice note, too.

Out of those, you would probably like:
- 99% Invisible - public radio style 15 minute shows about design (architecture / flags / world longest running lightbulb)
- Radiolab - more like the above, usually longer runtime, broader topic.
Seconding these. Radiolab is always interesting. They have what they call shorts and regular hour long podcasts.

99% Invisible you should only listen to if you can immediately image search the topic, as they're often visual. The show works without it, but you'll desperately want to see what they talk about.

A couple recommendations of my own:

Skeptoid - 15min shows investigating nonsense, in case you want to know a little more about any popular myths and conspiracy theories, when and how they originated (where possible) and why they're nonsense.

5 Live Science and Naked Scientist - They're recordings of radio BBC radio shows and are both on the same feed. 5 Live Science/Dr.Karl is a phone-in programme with Dr. Karl, who knows an inordinant amount of stuff and can talk intelligently about it. You need to be able to bear the callers though. It airs in the middle of the night, so you have mostly pensioners and truck drivers calling in. You'll hear the same names and voices all the time. Occasionally someone (mostly women for some reason) will treat the programme like a diagnostic session for their ailments, which can be quite cringe worthy, but the host will usually reign that in real quick.
Naked Scientist is a simple science news programme where several presenters talk about recently published papers and other science news. The main host is a virologist and also fairly well read, so he sometimes subs for Dr. Karl.

I mostly listen to video game dross otherwise, so not much else to recommend. I'm sure the BBC has a lot more interesting stuff, though I've never bothered to check. Not enough time in a day for any more shows anyway.

Maron's podcasts are great. I've been listening to it since the beginning. His intro might be too grating for some people, you can just skip it and get to the interview portion.

My top 5 interviews:

1) Robin Williams
2) Norm McDonald
3) Duncan Tressel
4) Maria Bamford (in a car)
5) Patrice O'Neal

I also listen to Doug Loves Movies sometimes, but only when he has strong guests on (like Paul Tompkins).

I may have to go back for this; Maron's intro was just so much self-fellatio that I gave up and didn't look back, 10 minutes into my first listen.

He is probably what most gaffers will be when they turn 50: excessive navel gazing and exploring their numerous neuroses, trying to mend the numerous bridges they burned over the years, and still trying to figure what they're supposed to do with their lives through a typical teenager perspective.  Usually it lasts about 10 minutes and then they get to the interviews, which are very good.

Yeah that is why I don't care about Maron's pod. I'd like to listen to that Patrice episode so I'll just skip to the actual interview.

I really like Nick DiPaolo's and Bill Burr's pods. Joe Rogan's pod is usually good unless he gets too into talking about how mind expanding and magical it is to take a lot of drugs or about conspiracy theory shit. :zzz Any Rogan pod with a comedian is gonna be great though.

I posted this in the other podcast thread, not knowing there were two of them:
http://www.kenandrobintalkaboutstuff.com/

Really enjoying Ken Hite's improvised weaving of connective tissue between nerdy stuff and conspiracy tropes as a kickoff to each episode.

Hip-hop: The Combat Jack Show. Pete Rock interview

If you're into ASOIAF I'd recommend the Boiled Leather Audio Hour for nerdy analysis/theories, and the Podcast Of Ice and Fire for pure fuckery.

second this one.  the RPG stuff is easily ignorable and a lot more focused on story telling and the structure of story anyway.  it's great stuff.
