Not to take away from West Ham because Payet was outpacing them and putting through balls perfectly all day and West Ham will probably be a side the big teams will struggle to get a result at along with Swansea. But still, Arsenal :rofl :rofl :rofl

Only got to see Arsenal v Crystal Palace today and Arsenal got off lucky. Palace couldn't keep the pace at the back but Coquelin should have seen a red, easily. Feel for any Palace Supporters because that was a rough game and they should have had a draw at least with the way they played.

Dutch and Belgium football really did get fucked in the ass by 90's reforms, esp. how the C1 has become a tool to make all the rich teams richer. Last I take a look at, those leagues were slowly becoming farm teams for the English clubs.

Thats how it is.

What really upsets me is how illogical all of the things surrounding football are. On one hand the Bosman ruling of course makes sense in the light of EU regulation of freedom of movement and labour etc. This would mean football is considered a business as any and the same rules should apply to the clubs right?

Wrong! If clubs are a normal business then why can't a club from lets say, Germany, play in the PML? If there truly is an open market and clubs are just a business as any other there should be no barrier of entry for Bayern Munich to play in England, or Aston Villa to play in the Serie A.

Also how are players not able to QUIT their jobs like other normal people? De Gea wants to go to Real but can't? What happened to giving your fucking notice and leaving? Is there some non compete clause in all of their contracts?

All of this just means everything is arbitrary bullshit meant to screw over the small leagues. Obviously football is a different animal then manufacturing, thats why we have world cups etc., maybe there should be special rules as well as this way the sport is going to hell.

I think a player is in theory able to buy back his remaining contract (it's mandatory in Spain to have a clause like that) but it's so prohibitive that it's just not feasible. To a layman like me, players are as much commodities/assets than employees and yeah you don't see anywhere else a company paying 50m to another company to snatch a guy, even a high ranking CEO that may be bound by a multi year contract. Or employee being owned in shares by different investors like Tevez was. Except maybe in showbusinesses, if even.

I have a hard time caring about players not being able to quit, they could just sign smaller contracts and not get stuck with one, but it's all about making as much cash as possible. Which is fair enough as well, but if you get yourself a huge deal for 5 years, it's hard to feel much sympathy when they want out a year early to go to Madrid or whatever. You brought up De Gea yourself, which in itself is a hilarious case and shows just how much the players and agents themselves are at fault for the situation, as he signed a new contract a week or two later with Manchester. So much for him missing his home city.

I think there is a clause that Real can buy him for 40 million, but other clubs can't.

Still it's silly you can't just quit. I mean no matter how good your job is, you should always be able to walk away if you want. You get paid weekly/monthly anyway.

It's not as much as caring about their feels, as finding it odd that in one case (Bosman) its all about freedom but in this case they can't do it.

I think Premium Lager point was less about being militant about that and more that football players are under a peculiar if not unique status and as such should maybe respond to exceptional laws. I'd say though that I think that while players themselves do accept the system, they're probably the less guilty party of all the actors.

I would be curious to see a system where a player can quit (with maybe a special notice period adapted to the game, 6 months or something). Not sure if feasible.

Honestly, European football is in dire need of a salary cap. That's the only measure that could curb the obscene wages and even the playing field at the top (League level and UEFA level) and a further boost at forming your own players. Financial Fair Play was an half-measure only there to avoid catastrophic collapse at the cost of entrenching old money in the game. The current European Cups set up is a disaster as well for the sport (but not for the pockets of clubs). The 90's setup of C1, C2, C3 was pretty much perfect.

I don't know if salary caps can fix anything at this stage, nationality rules are probably impossible to enforce now though.

Such a team, i still have my (albeit fake) Litmanen jersey from that team.

I'm starting to feel your pain though. Even the Bundesliga (sans Bayern of course) will become a farm league for the EPL if things continue like they currently are. The winner takes it all indeed.

At the very least FIFA has to heavily restrict lending of players.

If I walked away from a contract unfulfilled and unilaterally I would definitely face some repercussions. Wage labor is permitted more freedom of movement because to a large extent it's fungible.

Klopp looks like a legiut exciting signing for Liverpool, to be honest.

French media coverage of Platini succession seems hilarious. I listened to a radio news flash yesterday and it was framed as "A man that could always campaign on probity is now being taken down by someone who hates him and will lose the FIFA chair for it" or some such.
 :betty

I think Platini has decent convictions regarding the game and would be a step in the right direction (though it must be said that he did not accomplish that much as the UEFA head) but let's not kid ourselves, he's a politician through and through and he has been involved in the same shady backstage stuff that any of the FIFA goons. He was approached and lobbied by Qatar (along with then president Sarkozy) for the matter of the PSG ownership, lavish sport and media related investments in France & and probably the whole World Cup con, his son had been hired at that time as the head of a company owned by the Qatar sovereign fund for instance.

Still, I'm not too clear on what that arbitration council that handed the suspension is ? It's an internal FIFA thing ? If so, there could be some devious scheming in that whole masquerade.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/03/sports/fifa-scandal-arrests-in-switzerland.html
Quote
ZURICH — Swiss authorities began a new series of pre-dawn arrests Thursday in the broad investigation, led by United States officials, into corruption in international soccer. Sixteen people were expected to be charged by day’s end, law enforcement officials said, nearly doubling the size of an already huge case that has upended FIFA, soccer’s multibillion-dollar governing body.

Some of the arrests took place at the same luxury hotel where other FIFA officials were arrested in May. Swiss police entered the hotel, the Baur au Lac, through a side door at 6 a.m. local time. A hotel manager told visitors in the lobby they had to leave the property because of “an extreme situation.”

The police were targeting current and former senior soccer officials on charges that include racketeering, money laundering and fraud, authorities said. The new charges were expected to hit South and Central American soccer leaders particularly hard, the officials said.

Everyone in the world must be rooting for Leicester now, except Spurs fans.

It's better than any of the big five and watching them all implode all season has been spectacular. (The LFC Cycle is already kicking in. Next year will be our year if we don't win the Europa, la)

Both don't have easy run ins. It's technically possible for Spurs to win if they win all of their next games and Leicester lose all three. But Leicester has a really sketchy form Man U this weekend and then a pretty abysmal Everton before Chelsea at the end of the season. Spurs have Chelsea, a Southampton who are fighting for a potential Europa spot and a resurgent Newcastle on the last day. Leicester don't even have to win any more games as if Spurs lose any of those, Leicester win the title (And I reckon Spurs will really bottle it against Southampton who are a pretty underrated side this season)

But then Europe has had a pretty shit season in general. Liegue 1, Serie A and Bundesliga are just one team leagues. At least the La Liga dogfight is entertaining as well as the EPL.
