Baker refuses customers cake request, faces fine
« on: January 22, 2015, 06:54:01 PM »
Marjorie Silva, owner of Denver's Azucar Bakery, is facing a complaint from a customer alleging she discriminated against his religious beliefs.

According to Silva, the man who visited last year wanted a Bible-shaped cake, which she agreed to make. Just as they were getting ready to complete the order, Silva said the man showed her a piece of paper with hateful words about gays that he wanted written on the cake. He also wanted the cake to have two men holding hands and an X on top of them, Silva said.

She said she would make the cake, but declined to write his suggested messages on the cake, telling him she would give him icing and a pastry bag so he could write the words himself. Silva said the customer didn't want that.

"It's just horrible. It doesn't matter if, you know, if you're Catholic, or Jewish, or Christian, if I'm gay or not gay or whatever," said Silva, 40, adding that she has made cakes regularly for all religious occasions. "We should all be loving each other. I mean there's no reason to discriminate."

...

KUSA-TV reported the complainant is Bill Jack of Castle Rock, a bedroom community south of Denver.

In a statement to the television station, Jack said he believes he "was discriminated against by the bakery based on my creed."

"As a result, I filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Division. Out of respect for the process, I will wait for the director to release his findings before making further comments."

Quote
"There's no law that says that a cake-maker has to write obscenities in the cake just because the customer wants it," said Mark Silverstein, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union in Colorado.
Yet another attack on Religious Freedom by the ACLU

I, for one, am totally behind this unexpected, delicious trend of people expressing their views on gay rights via the medium of fondant. A couple more of these and TLC is gonna have enough material for a new spinoff. Cake Boss: Gay Marriage Spats Edition coming 2017

Personally, I’d vote for Gay Cupcake Wars.

I’m looking forward to having legal precedent set in her favor. Dude’s a jerk face.

I'm baffled how you can think this is the "same" thing as having a wedding cake made. Logically it follows that if you provide wedding cakes, you sell them to people who are getting married. Not selling them to a gay or interracial couple would be discrimination.

No harm or discrimination is happening with this case. I'd imagine this bakery wouldn't create a "Allah is god, kill all infadels" cake either.

Bigots don't use sense.

sure we do. we have enough sense not to prop ourselves up with hormones or mutilate our genitals when we're feeling down on life.  8)

i meant that it's the same in intent, not that it's the same legally. and let's be real here, anyway: no power like the aclu or those lgbt interest groups would fight for this guy.

in regards to intent, homos and cheeseburgers are some of the most narcissistic people to walk the planet and require effusive amounts of validation to keep their egg-shell exteriors from cracking. i mean, how hard would it be to find a different wedding cake vendor? -- one that, say, doesn't follow a religion known for its negative views of homosexuality. it's plain-as-day they're bullies masquerading as a "marginalized" class.  :lol

now, one huge positive to islamification in western societies is that this problem may very well cease to exist.  :-[

Yeah, they do.

Well, rather, they would if the case was not "make someone else do something which violates their rights," which is what this ass-hat was trying to do.

What's narcissistic about asking for the services that everyone else receives without protest? I notice this argument is usually raised with respect to gay people kissing or being intimate in public. No one says a thing or even notices when straight couples kiss/hug in public, why are gay people being "showboats" or "flaunting their homosexuality" if they do the same?

i'm talking more about the need for validation, which i suppose is a facet of the narcissism. it's more like "you better accept us for who we are unconditionally -- OR ELSE, bigot."

while public displays of homo lust are stomach-turning, i myself have never seen that used in the context of their narcissism or need for validation, nor would i necessarily consider it such.

While I too dislike the view that any criticism of anything=bigotry, ala

that being said the vast majority of cases aren't even like that. If we can "validate" a straight person for x, surely we can validate a gay person for the same thing. No one of serious merit is asking or demanding shit that constitutes special treatment.

Depends on where your starting point is. If you think of queers as aberrations any attention will get your blood pumping.
