Hotel Dusk
« on: January 22, 2007, 01:01:57 AM »
stolen from something awful forums:

Quote
The DS is all about "different" types of games, and Hotel Dusk, while not as much innovative, seems to be shaping up quite nicely. The game, made by cing, is a stylistic sequel to an early DS game, Trace Memory. The game, which is described as an "interactive graphic novel", has the following description from nintendo.com

Part hard-boiled detective story and part intriguing mystery, Hotel Dusk is an atmospheric yarn that takes place over the course of one night—December 28, 1979.

Kyle Hyde, a disgraced New York detective turned salesman, arrives at a run-down Los Angeles inn called Hotel Dusk. Once there, Kyle soon becomes involved in a 30-year-old mystery that involves lies, betrayal, kidnapping, and murder. And over the course of the night, he will also discover something very special about Room 215… a room that is said to grant wishes.

But who is Kyle Hyde? Why is he haunted by his past? And what happened in Room 215? Only by taking stylus in hand and navigating through the story's twists and turns can you learn the answers.

Features

* Players hold their Nintendo DS like a book and use the touch screen to grill characters, search for clues and solve mystifying puzzles.
* Simple point-and-click touch screen navigation players of any skill level can play.
* Innovative sketch animation character design, film noir camera angles, and dynamic lighting.

Hotel Dusk uses branching storylines to tell its tale, giving you many options for how to speak to people. Should you strong-arm the little girl in the hallway? Make nice to the hotel maid? Pretend to be interested in the manager's rambling stories? It's all up to you, but choose wisely. One false step could get you thrown out of the hotel and forever seal the mystery of what happened on that dark Christmas Eve so many years ago...

This is a game I'm looking forward to greatly. If it's anything like Trace Memory, it'll remind some of us about games like Monkey Island, Hugo's House of Horrors, and Myst. Trace Memory used the DS in ways that were particularly neat and innovative( for example  closing the DS partway to reflect the top screen off of the bottom screen to get a passcode  , and hopefully, Hotel Dusk will follow through.

A trailer can be seen at http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ds/awij/index.html

- something awful forums

The game got 2 8's and a 10 in the latest EGM.

I've never played Trace Memory (I'm not paying $20 or more for it), but I'm getting this game day 1. I've heard nothing but good about it. Hopefully I can beat PW2 before Tuesday.

Nintendo World Store gets Nintendo games early. I doubt that it's out anywhere else.

The skinny on Hotel Dusk:

- Slow start, but it introduces you to many characters along the way, making it interesting.

- The actual in game graphics are muddy as hell to give it a painting look, but the cutscenes and stuff like that are quite stylish and approachable.

- The adventure gameplay is pretty good. It's standard point and click, with logic based puzzles through character interaction, rather than stupid "put the square into the square hole!" Resident Evil breed. Which is a good thing.

- Solving puzzles utilizes the stylus in interesting ways, like picking a lock with a thick piece of wire. It's not anything innovative, but the puzzles for the most part utilize the DS's touch features in some neat ways.

- The story is pretty interesting, to say the least. It's got a noir vibe going on, and honestly, the game feels like Silent Hill without the monsters and fog, if that makes any sense.

- The dialog in this game is really colorful. It's got 1920's and 30's slang down pat, which gives to the games noir feel.

- The game offers a few innovative features for the adventure genre. Depending on your conversations with people, you can point out what they say out front or simply talk soothingly so they don't feel pressured. Depending on the mood, you can piss them off. On the flip side, if you gain their trust and be nice you can get new clues or new details about certain characters. Depending on your choices during puzzles or conversations, you can have a game over. A game over occurs when you get kicked out of the hotel, so don't piss people off.

I have a few problems with the adventure elements sometimes. You can't take any clue or item at any time, you can only take it depending on the situation, so it makes the puzzle solving linear. That's not a problem though, because the conversations you have with the people in the hotel make the game pretty non linear in some fashion.

It's a fun game.

Yeah, you're right about the linearity. It's my only real complaint. I usually like to pick up everything in these types of games and then go around experimenting, but this game limits basically what you can do...and I haven't explored much because of the tight path the game keeps you on (through chapter 2).

The text speed is really inexcusable. I fucking hate that.

It's slow. It's way slow. If you can read to the edge of the scrolling text-- that is, you are waiting for letters to appear as it scrolls-- it is too slow. ALSO, you can't adjust the speed (which, for this type of game, is nonsensical).

But the game is good enough to play it despite that.

Nintendo really fucked up with this game. I don't think it's anywhere in NY except for the Nintendo World Store and I can't be bothered to go all the way down there. I ended up buying Age of Empires DS for $20 instead. I almost ended up buying more (cheap) games, but I stopped myself in the end.

How come the Game Trailers review for this game is so shitty?

I like Game Trailers a lot but I feel like they dropped the ball with this one. They say things like "if you've played an adventure game before, you should be pretty familiar with how the game plays." What the hell is that? I HATE it when journalists assume familiarity. It's the laziest, most unprofessional shit ever.

MMan, I really want to punch that girl Melissa in the face. I usually don't mind kid characters, because I love kids (real ones that is), but Melissa is really running my patience thin.

As for the fountain pen
spoiler (click to show/hide)
what the hell? That was one vague as hell puzzle. It took me only 5 minutes to solve it after getting the pen but I don't recall any words on there, so I didn't know what the hell I was doing when I put flour on it. Did anyone say there were words on it? Because I sure don't recall any such conversation  at all.
[close]

I'm on chapter 4, and some of the characters are being bitchy as fuck. Some of them need a few good punches in the balls (or vagina).

Other than that, I'm enjoying the game.

Some of the puzzles in the game are kind of WTF inducing, not because they're challenging...but because they're broken.

Take for example the
spoiler (click to show/hide)
circuit breaker puzzle. You need to touch the two things at once but the DS touch screen doesn't detect two inputs at once...so you end up guessing towards the middle.

But you understand the DS' screen can't detect two inputs at once? It can't, unless something has happened recently.

It's nonsensical to include a puzzle that would require that line of thought when you know the machine can't actually do that. Kohler argued this on GAF and I agree.
