is your neckbeard ready for live action Zelda on Netflix?
« on: February 06, 2015, 05:18:59 PM »
http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2015/02/06/legend-of-zelda-netflix-series/

Quote
“The Legend of Zelda,” one of the most popular videogame series of all time, is in the works as a television show at Netflix.

The video streaming service is in the early stages of developing a live action series based on “Zelda,” about an ordinary boy named Link who must rescue a princess named Zelda and save a fantasy world called Hyrule, said a person familiar with the matter. As it seeks writers to work on the show, Netflix is describing it as “Game of Thrones” for a family audience, this person said.

The “Zelda” games have traditionally included swords and sorcery, like “Game of Thrones” or “Lord of the Rings,” but typically with a more light-hearted, kid-friendly tone.

Netflix is said to be working closely with Nintendo, the Japanese game developer that has made about 20 “The Legend of Zelda” games since the original, which was released in the U.S. in 1987.

Nintendo is very protective of its intellectual property and has allowed few adaptations over the years. An animated “Legend of Zelda” series ran for just one season in 1989. A 1993 movie based on Nintendo’s “Super Mario Bros.” was an infamous bomb.

As it is still seeking a writer to work on the series, Netflix has a long road to travel before a “Legend of Zelda” series actually becomes a reality. It’s also possible that Netflix or Nintendo will kill the project before it gets off the ground.

A Netflix spokeswoman declined to comment. A Nintendo spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

sigh

I could at least be moderately interested in an animated Zelda series. But live action? You know it's going to be cheap looking...

Yeah. Crazy thing too PD is Netflix don't make cheap shows. Like they're gonna be throwing at LEAST sixty mill at this when even half that would make a pretty solid animated adventure.

The problem is that unless you have a really good costume and set designer it's VERY hard to make a fantasy show look sleek on television, regardless of budget. That King Arthur show on Starz had quite an impressive budget but looked very similar to ABC's Merlin miniseries from the 90s. Game Of Thrones had a huge budget but looked pretty damn ugly in S1.

It's not like Zelda even has a truly distinct or noteworthy look either, which means whoever designs it will be leaning on a variety of generic shit. This is gonna be ugly...

Needs to go bright and colorful too imo. They absolute cannot go anywhere near TP style art wise. Broad color palette, light tone and characters. If this is some serious shit even 40% of the time it's gonna fail.

I want it based on Majora's Mask with Peter Stormare as the Mask Salesman, Danny DeVito as Skullkid, and Mia Khalifa as one of the Gerudo pirates.

All the Gorons should be Danny Devito and Michael Chiklis , all the Zoras should be voiced by Steve Buscemi, Mask Salesman should be Matthew Mcconaughey, Skullkid should be Lil B.

DISCLOSURE: I'm assuming I get more than one season just because of the property.

Honestly, I think I would go with establishing Hyrule and stuff as a society, with Link and Zelda kinda side players (as Gotham is kinda doing) and then start to introduce and reveal Ganon as this lingering dark threat (but steal from Ocarina by hiding him as some important regular human dude) before you sweep all the pieces together and establish the stakes with the triforce and blah blah blah and then Link's quest to save Zelda and everything.

I guess Angel is a show where I'd like to ape it by taking what seems small scale and start dropping prophecy shit* and then having it all go to hell as you actually deal with Ganon arriving and taking power. And you can then show how it effects everyone, not just Link and Zelda even as they become the primary characters.

I'm guessing they will do it like a watered down Game of Thrones clone without any of the death and sex and things that actually make Game of Thrones interesting. You'll have House Hyrule, House Goron, House Zora, House Gerudo, and House Kokiri. Maybe even have Tingle in a Hodor type role.

I'll admit it would be kind of cool to play with the "different Links" thing, and have each season feature a new Link in a new setting; which would mean they could eventually have a female Link. First season just do some basic shit, and do it well enough to garner some hype. Then in S2 do OOT.

Or do it like Ameircan Horror Story and bring back the same actors in different roles each season.
