lol I was 21 in 2004, so whatever I was listening to was lots of random cds, prolly lots of older stuff. the radio at the time was pure trash and completely unlistenable.

Looking back, 21 was my year of Portishead and Pink Floyd

Also my only real dabbling in jam bands but looking back nothing I'm ashamed of

(Phish ain't total shit, you just have to understand how to filter it out)

I was 21 in 1998.

I didn't really start listening to drum and bass seriously until 1999, but this is topical.

Just checked it out and yeah, no wonder I didn't remember anything. 2006 was dog shit time in musicville.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_in_music#Top_hits_on_record_in_the_world

Instead, I got into rock. Started getting into Radiohead. So OK Computer, The Bends, and Radiohead for sure.

Started getting into electronic then as well, mostly house like Moloko, Modjo, Daft Punk, Frankie Knuckles.

Found some old cds and yeah, this is what I listened to:

I was 21 in 2006.  That was the hideous era where ringtone rap ruled.  I think I stopped listening to rap around that time and listened to a lot of rock from the 70s and 80s.

I very nearly almost said something along the lines of "I don't know that many libertarians that are into punk". Don't know what I'm thinking these days :snoop
I found that they're mainly into prog rock and heavy/death metal.

Old punk has been so mainstreamed at this point.

The Occupy/Anarchist/Left stuff I've been to lately seem to be full of like...is it folk rock? At the occupy thing I asked about punk regarding all the hippie crap on stage and the response I got was that it was too noisy and upsetting. (And they aren't wrong about some of the new Punk that's seemed to take the wrong lessons from old punk/emo*.)

*I can't remember them now but I came across this great band on purevolume or something years ago that touted itself as "revolutionary anti-imperialist punk" so of course I had to listen. It was like thirty one minute long random guitar and drums (that were all indistinguishable and just fast/loud) with screaming (by multiple band members at times) of random phrases taken from what was probably a Noam Chomsky book overtop.

I turned 21 in 2004, which was quite possibly the nadir of American pop culture, so I filled the void by listening to a ton of Dylan, Bowie and the Velvets.  Not much has changed since then.
