Simcity 2013 could have been pretty cool if it hadn't been such garbage. And Cities XXL ended up being a massive disappointment. Hopefully, this one gets it right.

Game looks gorgeous.

I'll probably be too stupid and uncreative to play it, but I'm gonna grab it on a Steam sale for sure.

There's a 20% off voucher at GMG so it comes down to 24, I figure that's enough to support them and Paradox should offer strong support

If I have a criticism, it’s that Skylines feels very much like the game I wanted SimCity to be. It has the scale, and smart systems with legible cause and effect. What it’s lacking, in the early stages at least, is a distinct character of its own.

Damn this looks good. Will be away from my pc that can play video games decently until August, but that probably just means they fixed most of the bugs by then. I want to play it now though.  :joel

Took about 2 hours to make a city that didn't flop immediately.  :derp

My first city went down fast due to wasting too much money on power lines, but my second city is moving along pretty good right now.

The pollution radius for power plants isn't too bad, so you can have it relatively close to your population centers without making everyone sad. And don't go overboard on power lines, since electric power jumps from building to building, just make sure you've got one line going from the power plant to the city. In my case, I've got an industrial center around my power plant, so I've been able to eliminate most of my power lines except for the ones that go to my water facilities.

The more I play of this, the more it becomes obvious that this is the true Sim City 5. It's everything that Maxis' last gasp should have been and wasn't, because they were too busy trying to...I honestly don't know what they were trying to do, but it completely failed and was nothing like what a Sim City game should be. But Cities: Skylines most definitely is that.

I liked Cities XL, but it always felt like it was missing something that Sim City [minus the newest entry] had.

The people who come to these type of games are hardcore nerds who like City building. This isn't a genre like The Sims where you can easily expand to casuals.

So I think EA took the wrong approach in trying to make Sim City 5 into something it isn't capable of being. And Skylines seems to be satisfying that inner hard core nerd audience that has always loved Sim City.

Is there any way to score a DRM free version of this game? I saw there was a German retail release that I can get from amazon.de but that's it.

My first city is so sub-optimal but I want to get to the unlocks. The problem is that I have unlocked trains and I have no where to put them. I have this aversion to blank space and try to cram everything right next to each other.

I really need to start again.

The boxed copy requires a Steam account too, as per the system requirements. You'll have to wait until it hits GOG.

I get what you're saying, but i disagree on one point. These games hugely appeal to casuals, i've talked to people where the only game they buy is simcity once a decade.  :lol

Thinking about it this genre was the king of the positive feedback loop long before the call of duty series ever landed on the scene. The explosion of smiley faces and rapid upgrading of the neighbourhood when you demolish that shitty tenement block and plant a park in its place.  :rejoice

Still want impressions games to return though.

i'm not really sure what "casual" means in this context - it would make sense that SimCity appeals to SimCity fans, which might not be too strongly correlated to fans of the big videogame genres.

I think it means that the people who loved SimCity in the first place were attracted to games more in the mold of Cities: Skylines, as opposed to a watered-down version that attempted to appeal to "casuals" that don't give a shit anyway --unless it is in the form of the absolute fucking garbage that is SimCity BuildIt (I assume).

spent a few hours on this last night, had to restart a couple times as i messed up and went too deep into a loss making city, started taking loans and could never make my way back even when i got a 50k no interest, no payback gubment bailout! 3rd time i was fine, spent a few hours getting a decent city, starting to implement subway systems, reclassify the inner city slums to dense residential. bulldozing inefficient road networks and rezoning the city :rock

I love how this game makes it so easy to redo areas, i have no qualms moving structures and bulldozing precints on a whim because i want to build a stadium or move everyone into ghetto highrises surrounded by basketball courts.

I read a post at Reddit where one of the devs was jokingly complaining that the community is already fixing stuff they were working on.  :lol

I also saw a sick post about optimizing traffic.
