Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Just thought it'd be easier to make a catch all thread for the segments they post.

I enjoy having a thread for it now. I really enjoy this format he's settle on. Where he opens with a bunch of smaller stuff then has one big "feature" for the rest of the episode.

I never enjoyed the interview segments of both Colbert and Daily. Wish there were far fewer of them and focused more on stories.

Here's the long one from this week, Elected Judges, worth it outside of the topic for some of the ads and stuff they researched:

It's really amazing how much better Oliver is than Jon Stewart.

Last Week Tonight has been pretty consistently great, probably one of the best shows on TV to actually get in-depth, informative information about current issues/events.

It's bad that these fake news shows are better at investigative journalism than the real news shows, but then I remember that the real ones pander to the lowest common denominator

Aren't they all comedy shows?  Fox News is hilarious!

Oliver is a way better natural comedian than Jon Stewart imo. Stewart is rather hit and miss off script to me, whereas Oliver is pretty consistent.

I've never liked the "fake news" descriptor. It implies that news presentation has to be SERIOUS BUSINESS and try to mask its point of view or else it isn't "real" or legitimate in some way.

I don't think Stewart has done stand up regularly in years, maybe decades since his MTV show and stint replacing Larry Sanders. Oliver does tours every year, so his segments and bits naturally just slide in that delivery.

When you get down to it, most serious news shows are really just entertainment disguised as news. Colbert, Stewart, and Oliver are more like news disguised as entertainment, which works far better.

That was a great segment, but that trailer at the end looked like it gave off the exact opposite point Oliver was going for.

Cry me a river. I got an injury while performing for my college, they didn't do shit.
I knew what I was getting into. Got a scholarship for an ability, lose that ability, lose the scholarship. It's the same for artists, musicians and drama. Hell, even academic scholarships require you to keep those academics up. Why should this be any different? Gonna have a hard time getting me on your side on this one. Music performance students practice 5 hours a day, and several concerts a week on top of all the school work and they do it without special tutors or special classes for them. You don't get the opportunity to play at that level for nothing and you aren't exempt from the rules that most of the rest of the college is keeping.  I get that it's a million dollar industry. My answer? Shut down the industry and start a minor league or something. Really football has nothing to do with college.

I believe that episode was 45 minutes. So that was a typical ~20 minute segment except a little bit longer.

Oliver>>>>Stewart brehs. Right now Oliver's biggest problem is his gag jokes after reading a joke during his monologue. It gets pretty repetitive and cheesy.

It's a very telling episode of the American psyche:

Really? I liked the interview, went from some fun moments to Oliver calling him out while still being very fair and hearing Snowden out.

Just watched the IRS video and thought it was great as usual, and that I don't mind him using a similar pattern over and over again since he makes me laugh. The last few minutes are golden.

That fashion bit was relevant to my interests. I rarely buy clothes but I prefer to spend as little as possible. How the fuck can I be sure that shit isn't made with child labor? Super inexpensive shit most likely is, but expensive stuff doesn't mean it's not child labor. For all I know that's also made with child labor only they charge a lot more for it so it won't appear cheap.

Fuck this gay earth.

Same; my solution so far has been to not buy anything for like 2 years, and I'm doing better than I thought. Best part of it when people ask you if something you wearing is new  :neogaf
