Granted, the last DBZ game I played to completion is Budokai 1, but Xenoverse is the real deal. Combat is similar to the last game, but with a lot less jank, along with things in general feeling streamlined. Character creation is excellent, tons of customization when it comes to what character you make. Five different races, simple and easy character building.

Instead of replaying the glory moments from the show, you fight in new scenarios involving those same characters, to fix the timeline or some shit. Not very far yet, but combat is already frantic and fun. Tons of features, but you have to unlock them by doing story quests and shit like that.

Last gen versions are cheaper than current gen versions, comes out on PC next week. If you want a fighting game/action RPG hybrid, along with liking DBZ at any point in your life, its well worth the asking price. Single player, online co-op and versus, splint screen co-op and battle modes, tournaments, you'll be pretty busy.

Here's a comprehensive review:

Could never tell if Frieza was a effeminate dude or a really gnarly chick. CCH Pounder reminds me of Frieza as well.

This game actually seems...dope

It seems like a Phantasy Star Online/Destiny type of game, but it's a brawler with some RPG elements and it just seems like a sweet combo

I'm really really interested, but can't afford the game right now. Something to look forward to later.

Phantasy Star Online comparisons are on point. The biggest issue with the game thus far are servers are getting hammered and latency is piss poor at the moment, but I think the Japanese version eventually got fixed after release.

Here's my impressions after five or so hours-

Pros:
Character customization is really fun and diverse.

Racial differences actually matter, different animations and styles of attacks, racial divide of physical attacks versus ranged attacks.

A lot of content for a Dragon Ball game, a good amount of content in general.

Tons of people online/the game world feels really populated, you'll find a ton of created matches.

360 version is stable framerate wise, no chugging or droppage.

Story is simple but endearing, fix the past and fight the people fucking up the past.

Cons:
Competitive multiplayer is a joke currently, way too laggy and shit just doesn't feel right.

You can only have one character created at a time, there are more character slots though*.

Servers are spotty and you'll get disconnected randomly.

Framerate chugs in the hub world because of so many players being present, no framerate issues or chugging during combat though.

Takes a bit for you to feel more powerful/for your upgrades to matter.

*You collect Dragon Balls randomly throughout the game, I believe you can wish for a ton of money, attribute points, or another character slot

This game came out at the perfect time, not much else for a while gaming wise and its a contender for best Dragon Ball game of all time.

Apparently the game is ending up sold out at some retailers. Hard to know if there's a lot of demand or if stores ordered a small amount of copies.

I'd say its earned those sales. If there are updates and if new/free content is continually added this will be quite a gem. Really interested to see how the Global Tournament feature plays out, where you enter in a tournament and can watch people duke it out.

Really cool that you can be a proper majin, with shades

Gameplay looks like the PS2 Budokai games and I loved those

Got this and I'm only level 15, but I'm glad with how stupid looking you can make your character so far

I like this game a lot but I'm bummed the servers seem to have been down the whole time I've been playing.

Yeah, the servers have been fucked. Guess it either sold way better than expected or the servers in place are shit, probably both.

A big problem for some is some skills/clothing/stuff requires luck and grinding. If you just want to complete the game with a lot of challenge along the way grinding isn't required, but some really good shit can be unlocked by doing Patrol Quests.

If you want to cheese the game with a melee build, spend most of your points on:

Base attack
Stamina

High base attack means you do a ton of normal damage, high stamina means you can teleport and extend combos for a long ass time. BUT most classes have infinite combos without teleportation, for male Saiyans a X,X,X,X,Y combo leads right into the same combo. Infinites really depend on the AI spamming evasive attacks, same with human players.

My build is based around:

Base attack
Stamina
Ki supers
Ki

With a little bit put into health. Being a Saiyan and going super Saiyan means unlimited KI use, which means you can spam the fuck outta Ultimate Ki supers. To avoid being knocked out of Saiyan mode, just charge back up.

At the moment I'm focusing on Ki, Ki Supers, and Stamina. I'm tossing some points into Basic Attacks and HP just to keep up a little.

I'm only at ~20 right now, just finished the story mission where I find the people fucking with the timeline for the first time. So I don't think I'm close to getting Super Saiyan yet. That being said, how do you charge up Ki? Is it a button combination they didn't tell me or is it a skill I have to grind for?

That brings up my one other big complaint, grinding. Unless I'm doing something wrong, it just seems you have to grind Parallel Quests to get skills and gear, right? I'm not really bugged in a major way with it right now but if I don't get the Z-Soul for the mentor quest for Vegeta soon I'm gonna get heated.

The mentor system seems fucked, it takes me a long ass time to max out the friendship meter (can be seen via play data menus).

Charging up is a ability you unlock, eventually you can earn or buy the super saiyan ability.

Doing Parallel Quests with your mentor as a partner and killing people with their moves seems to be the best way to get points with them. I've just been spamming the two Vegeta supers I have and it's raising up slowly but surely.

The dev team could have done a bit better if they were less coy about what to do and just said directly how to do certain things.

Or maybe that's localization. I dunno.

Ended up picking this up on PC.  It is pretty fun.  The fighting is pretty shallow but the added RPG elements help things.  This is one of those rare fighting games I will probably never play in versus, especially with how broken some character builds are.  But teaming up for quests sounds nice.

Not the biggest DBZ fan but I hear this kinda plays like Destiny but maybe a little better. Is that so?

Maybe I'm not just not far enough along, but no.  This is a fighting game with "quests" that have you brawling and beating up CPU opponents, plus there's versus modes.  The Destiny/PSO stuff is just because you have a hub world with other players and can team up to fight the CPU with up to two more people.  You get "loot" from fights, but otherwise this is nothing like Destiny and that is a bad comparison to be making.

If you aren't really into DBZ, I could see there still being some enjoyment in this game, but you really need to be a fan for the story and quests to make sense.

Finally, the character creation is pretty limited.  You really can't do very to make the characters look all the different but I'm assuming more parts unlock as you progress through the game.  Regardless, I don't know why people are raving about this aspect when it's basically like you can create Gohan, Videl, Android 18, and Bulma knock-offs for the human-type characters...and that's it.

I started as a Saiyan, went back and tried a Majin, but in the end went back to a Saiyan again.   :lol  It just didn't feel right playing a Dragonball Z game and not being a Saiayn.  At least not initially.  I know you get more character slots when you beat the story levels.

Bahaha. I don't really fuck with DBZ at all but this looks like it's worth a buy during a sale for laughs.

Never watched a single episode of DBZ in my life, but damn this game is fun. I was not expecting this at all.

Here's my character:

Sorry for the oversized screenshot with black borders, I'm playing on a 21:9 monitor. The game is surprisingly fun, the fighting engine is simple but super flashy and easy to learn (I find it more enjoyable than smash bro to be honest), I've logged 12 hours in two weeks.

The only downside is that the servers are overloaded and its hard to get a connection, but you can still play offline (aka the city behind my character is filled with generic players standing around) but you can still do matchmaking and coop missions, and of course all the single player stuff.

It's strangely addicting! What a fun little game and perhaps my surprise of the year, so far. I was expecting some average licensed title but this is the real deal, folks.

You have your typical attack/strong attack/dodge/block/throw buttons, then you hold either LT and a button to unleash a special move, you can launch super powerful moves by holding both triggers.

You learn new moves by beating other characters, training with a trainer (right now my trainer is an angry dude called Vegeta who taunts me when I do bad). You have a leveling system with experience that you get from fights and doing the various quests.

It's neat stuff. really.
