rice in the rice cooker + chicken broth + a clove of crushed garlic
warm some beans and canned chopped tomatoes on the stove
defrost some chicken tenderloins in the micorwave
get water boiling to steam some peas or spinach
pan cook the chicken + add salt or sauce
drain and mix the beans+tomatoes with the rice when it's done

got yourself a cheap, healthy+filling meal in about 15 minutes.  I eat it several times a week for dinner.

in terms of not cheating by using canned sauces or whatever, I'd have to say baked chicken thighs smeared in olive oil with a sprinkling of salt and basil, served in a bowl of buttered white rice with a bit of veggies if i have them or care enough to steam em. takes like zero effort and is nearly impossible to fuck up.

i need to get me a crock pot.

EASY CROCKPOT CARNITAS
Author: Pinch of Yum
Prep time:  10 mins Cook time:  8 hours Total time:  8 hours 10 mins
Serves: 10-12

INGREDIENTS
4-5 lbs. pork shoulder
5 cloves garlic
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon oregano
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon chipotle hot sauce (optional)
juice of 2 limes
½ cup orange juice
12 ounces beer
½ cup salsa (I like to use a less chunky one)

INSTRUCTIONS
Place the pork shoulder in the slow cooker. Roughly chop the garlic and place in the slow cooker (I actually kind of rubbed it onto the meat to get as much garlic flavor as possible, but you could just toss it in, too).

Sprinkle the meat with salt, cumin, chili powder, black pepper, oregano, cinnamon, and cayenne. Rub seasonings onto the pork.
Add lime juice, orange juice, beer, and salsa. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours.

Shred meat with two forks directly in the slow cooker (or take out, shred, and replace in sauce). It should fall apart easily.

Preheat broiler. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place the shredded meat on the cooking sheet and pour a few spoonfuls of sauce over the top. Broil for 5-10 minutes or until you get browned edges on the pork.

Serve on tortillas with fresh cilantro, avocado, and lime juice.

When I'm super lazy:

Spinach salad, shredded cheese, chopped almonds with pre-cooked chicken. Drizzled in a balsamic or raspberry vinaigrette.

I could eat it every night.

Easy go to is salmon (made in the pan) with backed rosemary potatoes in the oven and some sort of pan fried veggie. Substitute poatoes with some sort of mash or other carbs and the salmon with pretty much any fish or meat that can be done in the pan.

I'll need your gruel recipe. I'm almost there anyways but lately I've been wanting to go into pure survival mode and just have a large pot of some flavorless nutrient-rich paste in the fridge at all times to keep me fueled.

I like mixing chocolate Slim Fast with french vanilla Myoplex. Shit's exactly what nutrient gruel should look, taste, and smell like.

If it's breakfast I usually swap the Slim Fast out for a mocha cappuccino Special K shake because it has caffeine in addition to nutrients and gruel. :aah

Bachelor days: Rice from the rice cooker, over-medium egg on top, okonomiyaki sauce on that.

Married and kids days: Brown rice and miso soup take about ten minutes to actually make, another 20~30 to leave alone to finish. Grilled fish gets started alongside those, finished right when I’m done. Alternately, pre-made gyoza are an easy win, but I’ve been screwing them up lately.
