sonic the hedgehog
« on: March 09, 2015, 08:49:01 AM »
i never played these or any sega stuff as a kid. i'm playing the first one. this game is pretty sweet, i like the level design and the mechanic of how rings work. if i'd played this when i was 13 i'd totally have written erotic fan fiction about it.

it's good but not as good as it was in Mario 3

I'm more interested in the stage intro card's use of the early 90s not-aligned-with-anything diagonal ellipse thing (see also Seinfeld logo). what was that all about? was there like a diagonal ellipse art movement and manifesto a couple decades before that it was popularizing? can someone give me background on this?

The 90's were a radical time and there was a lot of 'tude going on. Not sure if that helps explain it.

Just stick with the Genesis games. The rest are garbage. Well the recent racing games are good.

The second one is the best.

this is a lie perpetuated by a delusional fringe of old-school Sonic fans. Sonic 3 and Knuckles is clearly the best.

I am sorta surprised we're still talking about Sanic. I mean he had 3 incredible games back to back. Then a not so bad Dreamcast game followed by a series of terrible to mediocre games. I am shocked that they've gotten this much mileage out of it.

You know what?  Just play Sonic The Hedgehog 1 and stop there.  Seriously, there's no need to go any further.  The other Genesis games are good but you've already played the best one.

My plan is just to go as far into the series I can stand, so Sonic 1-3K and CD, then Nights and Burning Rangers, then however far I get into the Dreamcast and later games. Though in reality I'll probably never even finish the first one, so it doesn't matter.

recursivelyenumerable, just play Sonic 1-3/K and skip over to Colours/Generations.  hat's probably the least-painful way to get through the series.  That is, if you even get past Sonic 1, haha.

No shame in my game, I do hate how the series devolved into furry porn and fanfiction, plus decades of terrible games with very few exceptions. I mean Disney and Looney Tunes characters may have had the creepy too but with Sonic it became the majority of the audience that isn't children.

Same.  I hate the furry fanbase, but that doesn't change that I think some of the games are pretty good.  I distance myself far far far away from that shit.

It's probably because I didn't like Sonic Adventure much, or a lot of the games during the PS2/DC era.  And for a lot of people, Sonic Adventure 1/2 were their first Sonic games, which introduced a lot of stuff like spoken dialogue in cutscenes, "deep lore", multiple characters interacting with each other a la an RPG, etc. to the series. I didn't care because it's a platformer and that is generally unnecessary to me in a game that I could probably 100% in 6-10 hours.  But a lot of people ate that stuff up and that represented Sonic to them since that's their first exposure to it: Sonic then became a story-based, character-focused kind of series... so we get people who ate the terrible games up, made fanfiction and fanart, and whatever.  I don't get it, and I don't think I ever will.

That ain't Sonic to me since I grew up with the ones on the Genesis (+Sonic CD on the PC), and whatever games I did like post-PS2 had good mechanics like Colours or Generations (or even Unleashed's day levels) and were less focused on a narrative.  It's one of those series where there feels like there are more bad games than good (and you could certainly argue that is the case), but whenever there are good games, they feel like they handle nicely and I enjoy learning how to speedrun them.  I don't like letting shitty fanbases influence what I play and what I don't.  That's dumb.

I played the Genesis Sonic games not too long ago and they didn't hold up well.  The first one did as did 3K but the second was a snooze once you got all of the chaos emeralds.  It's probably the biggest offender of the "hold right to win" Sonic formula (keep in mind I avoided Sonic 2006, Black Knight, and Boom so I could be wrong here).

Sonic Adventure was neat at the time but I think a lot of it was due to the fact that it was the first 128 bit game I played so I was wowed at non-shit 3D graphics (I didn't have a PC at the time of course).

Other than Sonic Transformed, you can probably just avoid the entire series and even with Transformed, it's more of a love letter to the Dreamcast era Sega than it is a Sonic racing game.

I put in Sonic Adventure again after I finished Shenmue 2. Maybe it's partly the Dreamcast controller's fault, but you feel like a drunk if you're not hitting the angles perfectly. It feels like Sonic '06 looks like it plays. The exaggerated facial expressions were killing me, too.
